I can't believe we're on season two already! We've got some great characters joining in/being introduced this season, between Gunn, Darla, and the host of the demon club. The Hyperion episode is one of my favourites. The show really shines when it comes to these depressing, morally ambiguous stories. Angel wanting to redeem an evil building and feeling at home there at the end is kind of touching.

Season two is my absolute favorite season of Angel, I'm so excited we've reached it. "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been" is such a huge standout for me. One of many of Tim Minear's (their best writer, imo) episodes that I love.

Alright S2! Glad Gunn joined the cast. Even with Wes replacing Doyle, the show is light on characters, and Buffy also added characters as it went like Spike, Oz, Riley, and Anya(and of course Jonathan for that one episode). Also despite the haunted past and all, their old office was kind of a dump, so stylistically if nothing else, it's a big upgrade. I'm guessing he used the bag of money to buy the place(hopefully there was some left over). I never really got the point of ep1 other than for Angel to have this crisis of having killed another champion. I mean what did they want with some random woman's baby? Maybe I missed something. Also what were the drivers in the cars thinking with Medieval Times going on in the middle of the street? Didn't get much on Darla this ep, though it's weird Lilah would tell her it's a beautiful day outside. Not exactly of much interest to a vampire. Still, good to once again see this different side of demons that they're not all mindless killers, which this show touches on much more often than Buffy. Also I like that they threw Faith in there so we see she's not losing her way in prison. That was my favourite moment of ep1. Ep 2 was much meatier though. Felt the battle with the demon was pretty lackluster but I love the personality they gave him. I think Angel deciding to turn the hotel around and use it for good was part of his own redemption as well. He abandoned those people for trying to kill him even though they were under the demon's influence, and he's ashamed of that being who he is now. He contributed to that place being so evil and he needs to set it right. Also liked seeing Wesley getting more confident with dealing with magic in doing the raising ceremony. Our boy is expanding his skill set.

I personally love episode 2. In my Top 10 for Angel for sure.

I'd say Ep 1 serves a few purposes: 1. Resets the status quo between S1 and the present in preparation for the rest of S2. 2. Sets up a couple of themes and plot threads of S2 that will carry forward. 3. Establishes characters and digs a little into their trajectories going forward. The ep did mention that the reason the woman was targeted was because her baby would grow up to be a force for good or powerful mystic. Similar to the three blind kids at the end of S1 so I get why it didn't completely jell with people. I honestly don't think the car drivers saw the joust. I mean this was never confirmed but I personally always thought since the Tribunal was a mystical event, the joust and participants were manifested or pulled into a slightly mystical plane that remained hidden from the normal world. But tbh since they never go into it in the episode, it's not strictly canon.

"Are You Now or Have You Ever Been" (Ep 2) is a top tier Angel episode. Tim Minear is one of my favorite Angel writers throughout its run. He wrote very briefly for X-Files (just 2 eps in S5) and for Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, one of my fav iterations of Superman on screen. He also goes on to write for American Horror Story for quite a lot of episodes. Tim and David Semel (Director) really delivered a stellar ep. I think what I loved so much about this episode is the balance of tone and topic: the eerie paranoid atmosphere they managed to hone in on as an aspect of the McCarthyism of the 50s in the US, and blacklisting & prejudice. Plus the poignant look at race relations, racism, and racial identity. Plus the ever present themes surrounding Angel's path toward redemption, the ups and downs of that as he struggles between his darker instincts (letting the hotel residents all die) and his growing morality/guilt that came with now having a soul. I really like that this story really highlights the fact that Angel having a soul doesn't automatically make him kind or good. It just provided him a pathway or opportunity. He still has to fight and try, sometimes failing, to stay on that path. Which, of course, is very human. After all no one is 100% good all the time by nature. We all have to work at it and keep trying too. The title "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been" was a genius pick. Obviously it refers to the McCarthyism scare tactic of putting people on public trial and asking them "Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party of the United States?" Yet the question "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been" also can be applied to Judy being harassed and interrogated for her "one drop" of Black blood. And lastly there's the personal question of who Angel is. Is he a monster with empty eyes that lives in room 217 but never engages with the residents, is he a "collaborator" with the Paranoia Demon willing to feed them to the demon, or is he a hero willing to save others? The answer, of course, is all of the above. And with the decision to have the team set up offices in the abandoned hotel after it is cleansed, I feel like ep 2, along with some parts of ep 1, really launched the start of S2. I'm excited to see you continue. S2 and S3 of Angel of my favorite seasons, personally.

"Is it safe?...Can I go out now?" Fucking hell the subtext of those lines break me every time...

The first episode, Angel saves a damsel in distress, what else is new? This time the writers don’t even bother to give her a name. Too bad you didn’t show the credits, David Boreanaz was hilarious. The second episode was so much better, one of the best of the show in my opinion for all the reasons that everyone have said. A lot of references to history, to movies and even to Classical Greek Theater (the chorus in the lobby giving commentary). Simply a masterpiece. Did you notice when they went trough the abandoned hotel in the previous episode?

Two good episodes of Angel. Thanks for the reaction. Yes! We are introduced to "The Host" at Caritas. I have a feeling we are going to see him again. Good episode to intro the season with shows Angel is still thinking about the prophecy. We got introduced to Darla proper, yes, the same one from Buffy, the one who sired Angel, we learn it really is her. I wonder what plans they have for her to mess with Angel. They are still without a place, nice continuation from the last one. Second episode, they finally have a new place! It was neat to see some background on Angel again, we don't get a lot of "modern era history" on Angel, so the 50's was a neat time period to see him in. Otherwise, a social relevant episode. And we see Faith is on a redemption arc, nice to know that is still going on. I also love Cordy, she really is growing as a person. And Gunn looks like a regular member of the team already.

'Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been' is easily in my top 3 episodes of Angel. Near perfect plot, plus as someone who struggles to connect with Angel as a character this showcases some of his best qualities.
