I loved that Giles faked a binding ritual solely to get Buffy to open up about what happened - 100% father figure yet again

Basically Buffy's death kind of ruined the slayer timeline. After she died and Kendra was called, Buffy was never really officially the true slayer in terms of the slayer line. So, you need to assume that Buffy's death in S1 eliminated her from the line, so Faith was called when Kendra died, and that's how they would go on. Buffy is no longer part of the line.

Ashley

If Buffy dies, then there would be only Faith as the slayer -- no new slayer would be called up. If Faith dies and Buffy is alive, there would be two slayers -- a new one would replace Faith. If both Buffy and Faith die, there would be 1 new unknown slayer called up to replace Faith. Consider it as if Buffy is actually still dead.

When Buffy died the slayer line ended for her, when Kendra was called Kendra held the slayer line as Buffy's replacement, meaning if Kendra dies, the next slayer is called, and that's exactly what happened. This is an unprecedented situation, there have never been 2 slayers alive at once, before now. No one knew exactly what would happen. It appears that Buffy dying and Kendra being called meant Kendra held the slayer lineage at that point, and not Buffy, so if Buffy died again another slayer would not or never be called, cause her replacement was already called with Kendra. Then Kendra died and her replacement came with Faith. So only when Faith dies, does the next slayer get called. It's important to understand that Kendra was never an accident, she was always Buffy's successor, and as such, Faith is Kendra's successor. The real accident is that Buffy came back to life, though she still has the powers of a Slayer, she doesn't hold the lineage anymore.

Here's an easy way to think of it: When Buffy died she spawned Kendra, at that point Buffy was cut off from all future slayers, even though she came back to life. Kendra was Buffy's natural successor, the power to spawn future slayers was moved to Kendra. When Kendra died, she spawned her successor, Faith. The power to spawn future slayers moved to Faith. If Faith dies, another slayer would be spawned. Buffy has been cut off from the ability to spawn future slayers when she died, her natural successor (Kendra) took over at that point. It's a fluke that Buffy is still alive, while she has slayer powers, and is connected to the slayer line from the past, she is cut off from the slayer line of the future.

I think they did a good job with this one insofar as tying up some plot points while opening new ones. We had Buffy be jealous of Kendra in the last season, so it was a little bit of a rehash for her to also be jealous of Faith, but I guess (in fairness) that's like a character trait for Buffy so it makes sense she'd feel the way she did. I also think they handled it better this go around. The plot here is pretty simple and straightforward. As with the last episode, the story is less about the monster-of-the-week and more about the character drama, meaning it's more character driven than plot-driven, but I honestly prefer episodes like that. Not that I won't take a goofy "Ooops a body just fell out of a locker, who done it?" or "oh no this spell went horribly wrong" episode, but I think the character ones are definitely Buffy's strong suit. Willow is adorable in this episode. I think by this point, they had pretty much caught onto the fact that she was a fan favorite, so she gets more lines, but ALSO, I think for Willow this represents character growth. Instead of being shy and quiet and scared to express herself, she's more confident. If people think she's strange or what she says is silly, she's not as worried about it. We also see this in her being more vocal about wanting to help with spells and such. Oz is also adorable. Even though Giles is mostly in the background here, there's some good moments with him acting as The Dad of the group, both with him trying to suss out what is wrong with Buffy without being too intrusive or nagging and with him being protective of Willow (since he knows how playing with magic can go wrong). I honestly think they didn't know what to do with Xander and Cordy, but that's okay. Sometimes certain characters just don't fit in a storyline and that's how it's gotta be. Loved this reaction!

I was definitely confused like you the first time, as are MANY others, so you're not alone. All you really need to know is Buffy is the anomaly. She shouldn't be here. The others should.

The way I look at it in regards to intro spoilers, you're seeing what the original audience would have on first viewing, and they're generally designed to avoid giving away major info. Even here you only recognized the one vamp from the credits after the fact. Usually in shows at this time that had post intro credits they'd leave any guest star names that would give away a major plot point till the end credits. So they were bearing spoilers in mind. The SG1 intro you're seeing OTOH wasn't what the original showtime audience saw, which originally was a slow panning shot of a Ra statue(pretty boring intro). Still the biggest spoiler there would probably be for Torment of Tantalus, as if you were really looking you might piece together using lightning to power the gate from the intro. Even the shot of Sam from when she had Jolinar gave nothing away out of context. Speaking of SG1, the intro will change in S6, and there are some minor spoilery shots, so skip it till you get past the first 6 eps of that season. That's a ways off though and I'm sure someone will remind you as you get closer to that. Faith ended up being one of my favourite characters in this show, in spite of(or perhaps because of) her issues. She was pretty out of line trying to tell Buffy how to live her life. I've never been a fan of people who think sorting out other people's lives is any of their business. But then you see her fall apart when her past catches up to her. Faith is clearly one of those people who has a lot of insecurities but hides it under an abundance of outward confidence. She's "damaged goods", but I find those characters interesting. She's kinda like Jack from Mass Effect 2. And Mr Trick is definitely one of the more entertaining vampires. Guy's got swagger. Gotta mix it up from the mindless, growly mooks from time to time.
