One Who Walks Behind

Yeah this is a fun episode, interesting concept but overall it doesn't evolve the plot all that much when compared to what came before and what comes after. There are actually better filler episodes than this, 2x21 is one of my personal favourites along with 4x6, but it's a fun one to watch and have exist within the SG1 line up. Overall it's one of those episodes that, were I to watch the show by myself as I sometimes do, I would skip over. Having seen it a few times I know the plot, there aren't any great speeches or moments that I want to relive or amazing visuals. Even the comedic moments aren't good enough to come back to, again 2x21 has a much better comedic timing set in the episode. What I will say is that especially Judge really got to show his acting here and I'm amazed with the entire group and their switch of personality at the drop of a hat between playing eachother's character. Even just Shanks going 'Danny-boy' in perfect O'Neill fashion was great. Looking forward to the next one, we're in for a wild ride.

Good to have you back. I always had a bit of a soft spot for this episode. Can't be sure exactly why... I just do :)

You shouldn’t talk about future episodes. Let him set his own expectations.

Inventions to fight the Goa'uld! This was one of my favourite episodes when I was little and I'm still very fond of it. Great performances especially from Christopher Judge and Michel Shanks who also played Machello This is one of the few times we hear about other human societies that have fought against the goa'uld, and what happened to them, like the planet where Daniel found the quantum mirror. Since Earth was almost wiped out at the end of last season, you have to wonder if they shouldn't have taken Machello's deal.

Definitely intended to be a light, fun episode. Seeing Christopher Judge play Jack O’Neill is by itself worth the price of admission. It would never have worked if the writers and actors hadn’t nailed these characters with such recognizable quirks and mannerisms. I’m impressed that Sam came up with the solution when Machello could not.

Gotta love a body swap episode. It's such a sci-fi staple. I agree this is just an ok episode made better by how well the cast play the switcheroo hi jinks.

And kudos to Michael Shanks pulling double duty in this episode as Machello. 👏

You know when Machello first starts copying what Daniel says, I think most people assume he was just acting senile to throw them off. That might have been a welcome side effect, along with making him look crazy so nobody believed Daniel after the swap, but I swear he saw Daniel and quickly decided to steal his body and was trying to work out his inflections as quickly as he could. This is IIRC the first appearance of kelno'reem. There's a funny origin behind it. Chris Judge tended to enjoy Vancouver's night life a fair bit during the run of SG1, and as such would often come into work with hardly any sleep. When he dozed off during a scene (briefing room scene I think), the director caught him and asked if he was sleeping. He vehemently denied it, saying that he was meditating, because that's what jaffa do. Either they liked the idea, or knew it was BS and decided to include it in future episodes to get back at him. But yeah, jaffa meditation came about because Chris Judge was sleepy and hung over. I think shows need to be careful when it comes to body swap/multiple personality stories. Some people just do it better, while others don't sell it as well. Jeri Ryan on Star Trek Voyager was pretty good at these types of things, and Michael Shanks was likewise great(never even guessed it was him under makeup the first time I watched it). I think Anderson really failed to fully capture anything more than a shadow of Teal'c and Daniel's mannerisms. Judge did a better job playing O'Neill, but a bit overplayed IMO. In short they didn't nail the central premise of the episode, which brought the episode down. Still there was some decent lore building, and it does raise some interesting ethical questions. I mean if Machello's tech plus Earths resources could defeat the goa'uld, is 1 life too much to ask for saving billions? Also if you met a war vet whose entire life had been suffering, would you be willing to give them years off your life so they could enjoy a little peace for once? I'm a completionist so I don't skip episodes(even Emancipation) on rewatches, but I agree that overall this is on the lower end for me.

Stef Furness

I hear Shanks more than see him in this role (even as a professional portrait painter, I can only see him in the eyes when I look really hard) - he sounds like Daniel with a cold. That story about Christopher Judge is hilarious. I'd never heard that but was starting to wonder during Faily's watch when the first mention of kelno'reem was. Thank you for sharing it.

Guys, I've seen this episode many times but this is the first time I realized that it's actually Michael Shanks playing Machello. Mindblown. Seems kinda unneccessary though. Still gotta admire his make up.

James Yancy

It should also be mentioned that Shanks pulled double duty as the voice of Thor as well.

I feel like some of these episodes are out of order, this is episode 18. A Matter of time was supposed to be 15, and The Fifth Race was 16.

According to the Wikipedia episode list https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Stargate_SG-1_episodes Faily is watching the series according to the Showtime airing...Sky One had a slightly altered schedule, as you're suggesting. My season 2 box set also has them in the order you listed.
