This is one of my favorite movies! i remember watching this in elementary school. I was obsessed with it.

Brent Justice

Well I know what I'm doing now, *drops everything, downloads video and gets snacks*. BTW, just a little information about this movie. It was intended to be a trilogy when it was made. I don't know the details as to why it wasn't. However, once the series SG1 was picked up they meant for that to directly be cannon with this movie, and the series is, and it is100%. This movie happened in the SG1 universe, it was the start of it all (even if the actors are different) the characters are THE SAME. SG1 simply took what the movie provided, and expanded upon it in great ways so that a series would be viable. All the little differences between the movie and what has been expanded upon in the series has an answer for it, like why we don't see Jaffa with Gou'uld larva, and obviously why in the movie they only thought it went to one address, which in the movie that is what it was supposed to be, but SG1 the series expanded on that concept for there being multiple gates so that a series would be viable. It wouldn't have been very exciting if it only went to one planet lol. Also, the DHD was invented for the series, that did not exist in the movie. Other little things here and there, but there are answers for why this and why that. The theory that Daniel came up with about the Pyramids being landing platforms for aliens (which is the whole basis of Stargate) is true in the movie and series. In the movie, though Ra was just solo, not part of a greater "Goua'uld" species, but in the series, they obviously expanded that so a series would be viable.

Ahhh! Thanks for the insight fam. Please feel free to fill in spoiler free gaps- this was helpful. Back of my mind I was wondering where the DHD was. Appreciate it 🙏🏽

Brent Justice

NO problem, so far I haven't spoiled anything, as the series goes on if you have questions I'll be glad to fill em in, spoiler free. Also, one other fact worth knowing, in the movie it was this "Ra" that invented the Stargate, just a portal from Abados to Earth. The Goa'uld were invented for the series. So even at the start of SG1 they think it was just the Goa'uld who created the Stargates. As you learned in a recent episode the current thinking from everyone is that the gates were not made by the Goa'uld afterall, so that's a big deal. But in the movie it was made by Ra using the Naquadah from the planet they were mining, the Stargate is made of Naquadah, which is a unique metal. I use to run and be part of a big SG1 forum back in the day doing running commentary threads/review threads on forums like Gateworld and TrekBBS, so I was way into Stargate, I know a lot about it.

Brent Justice

I think I was like 14 when this came out, and I highly enjoyed it, was very excited when it got a series.

Ricardo Pomalaza

bro I've been waiting for this reaction!! Just finished watching it and I'm sad that you didn't have subtitles on for this. The whole interaction with Ra and Daniel was important and added to Ra's character. Shau'ri and Daniel also had some intimate conversations which was more character development. Subtitles would've been clutch. Anyway, now you know how Daniel got involved with the stargate and how it all began. This was awesome!

Brent Justice

(watching the video now) You mentioned about the "Molecular Deconstruction" thing, yes, it does that, but then it does send your information through a wormhole to the other side. So it deconstructs you and sends you through a wormhole and reconstructs you on the other side, it's very similar to a Star Trek Transporter, except in this instance it can send you through a wormhole and at intergalactic distances. IN the movie she states they are on the other side of the known universe, literally, another galaxy. But, in the series we learn Abados is the closest gate to Earth, so they were just mistaken in the movie :p What you are seeing there is a change they had to make to make the series viable with a multiple gate system.

Brent Justice

You should really watch that scene again between Ra and Daniel speaking with the subtitles on so you can see what they are saying. You missed vital information there. Please re-watch that scene with subtitles. It explains a lot there, exposition you are missing.

I think it was just that version of the movie that didn't include subtitles. Oh well. No way he could know that so it's not on him. Would be nice if he rewatched the foreign dialogue scenes with subtitles though. They might be on YouTube.

Brent Justice

So I just finished your whole reaction video, thank you for the reaction, I enjoyed it. My only critique is that I, like others, am sad you did not watch it with the subtitles on. You are missing like half the dialog. The scene between Ra and Daniel is important on the ship, and the scenes between Daniel and Sha're are also important, their relationship forms in that dialog, and you aren't seeing it in this video. I urge you to go back and at least watch those scenes again with the subtitles on to pick up on the dialog. If you wanted to watch it again even with subtitles, you'd also pick up on some other dialog too which might make things make more sense, or fill in gaps. I urge you to do this on your own, just so you are fully informed.

failwhale34

Oh shoot! Thanks for filling that in just seeing these comments about that now. They went for extended periods of time without subtitles was kinda waiting for them to pop up 😂 figured they weren’t supposed to be any for a weird reason? guess there was! Appreciate the heads up guys will go back and check it 🙏🏽

This might be a long comment, but Stargate is my all time favorite movie so i have to! I’ve watched the stargate franchise (stargate, stargate sg1, stargate atlantis) since i was little so i’m a big fan of it. Funny thing, I found your channel by watching your harry potter reactions, and when i was scrolling through your videos, i saw that you were reacting to stargate and my head just about exploded because i don’t know anyone who reacts to the show haha! Anyway, there’s many things I love about this film such as seeing jack at a lower point in his life, daniel having to deal with people constantly hounding him for his ideas about the stargate, etc. I especially love ra and his jaffa’s costume designs, they’re seriously so intricately done and I wish sg1 used the same concept. But the main thing I love is the cinematography. Everything looks so beautiful, the way shots are proportioned, the colors, etc. I’ve seen the films many times and each time the cinematography reminds me why I love it! My favorite shot is actually a more obscure one. It’s the shot where jack is by himself putting together the bomb but gets interrupted by his team member, and he don’t say anything, as the shot cuts to him slowly hiding the detonation trigger behind him. My next two favorite scenes are the one where daniel goes through the gate for the first time, and stops to look as the event horizon as he is about to step through, with the music rising to a piercing sound, it’s beautifully chilling. My third favorite scene is the one where ra speaks to danny, the way the language sounds, and ra getting increasingly angry, then angrily takes his locket back, it’s a scene that really stands out to me because it’s so well acted. So those are my top three scenes! I love this film and I’ll also leave the translation to the scene I just spoke of, because it does contain a lot of exposition and this version didn’t have the subtitles. So glad that everyone is getting to watch stargate!

sarah

Here is the translation for the long scene where Ra speaks to daniel, direct translation from subtitles. The reason why I have it memorized though is because I shot a voiceover acting video for fun with the translation on screen, where i played both parts. I played the scene over and over again to write it down and then study it, to pronounce the ancient egyptian/goa’uld dialect exactly right and then listened to it many more times to get the intonation of the words just right. You wouldn’t even know I voice Ra because I altered the voice to sound deep and with a threatening echo like Ra’s goa’uld voice. I obviously don’t sound like Daniel though but it’s still a cool video. If anyone wants the link to the video on my twitter I’d be happy to comment it! it’s a video I’m proud of because I really strove to play ra’s anger accurately but with meaning. TRANSLATION: Ra: “ You should not have re-opened the gate. Soon, I will send your weapon back to your world with a shipment of our mineral which will increase your weapons destructive power, a hundred fold.” Daniel: “ Why would you do that?” Ra: “I created your civilization. Now, I will destroy it. But before my workers question my authority, you will prove that I am their one god, by killing your companions.” Daniel: “If I refuse?” Ra: “Then I will destroy you, and all who have seen you. There can be only one, Ra.”

Brent Justice

Can you also fill in some missed dialog between Daniel and Sha're ? I think he missed their relationship and how many things they said together.

sarah

definitely! I’ll comment the translation as soon as possible!

sarah

This is the scene right after Ra kills one of his jaffa with the kara kesh (known as the hand device/ribbon device). Daniel is holding a pot over the fire as Skaara’s friends are sitting around him laughing. TRANSLATION: Daniel: “Why are you laughing” Skaara’s friend: “Husbands don’t do this work.” Daniel then walks over to the tent/room sha’re is in. TRANSLATION: Daniel: “Married?” Sha’re: “Don’t be angry. I didn’t tell them.” Daniel: “Tell them what?” Sha’re: “That you did not like me.”

Brent Justice

Thanks for the dialog, cause I think without it FailWhale didn't realize Daniel and Sha're actually got married according to Abadonian traditions here.

Koala Banana

Couple retcons I wanted to point out. There's no whirlpool behind the gate anymore. And the planet Abidos is not in some far away galaxy, it was moved to being relatively close to Earth. All addresses in the show are within the Milky Way galaxy.

Ugly Pig

And, of course, Jack O'Neill in the show spells his last name with two l's.

sarah

and also here in the movie, they show that jack’s son’s name is tyler, but it was changed to charlie for the show.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Also after the gliders bomb the city SKAARA - Shau'ri. Shau'ri. What happened here? SHAU'RI - Ra punished us. SKAARA - Why? SHAU'RI - What happened to Daniel? What happened to Daniel? KASUF - Son, we should not have helped the strangers.

Timothy Nikiforovs

1:26:20 Threw them in the gulag? Surely you meant Goa'ulag(cricket sounds). Glad you finally got around to the movie, even if it needed subtitles on. I think now you have a fair number of "oh that's what that scene was about" moments now. Obviously they changed quite a bit in the series, but the movie did a good job setting up the universe. Ra was actually the most powerful Goa'uld and his death actually led to a lot of instability among them, but youll find out more on that later on.

James Yancy

Maybe Charlie can just be his middle name. I actually go by my middle name rather than my first name. I mean, yeah, it was retconned but not irreconcilabley at least in this instance.

James Yancy

Yeah, one of the theories is that Ra had been hoarding the best technology for himself, which was why Goa'uld ships suddenly got faster than Teal'c thought they were. The idea is that the hoarded tech started leaking out to the other System Lords after Ra's death.

Anonymous

Negative. Not all addresses used in the show are strictly Milky Way, 5th Race jack dile's a distant Galaxy of the Asgard and I guess this is cheating a bit but Stargate Atlantis is in the pegasus Galaxy.
