The reason that you noticed the season feels off is because for season 4 they fired Dan Harmon, so the creator was not there writing or directing.Joel McHale really pushed to get Harmon back for the 5th and 6th season and succeeded, so if it feel's off, just know that the following seasons retain the style and feel of seasons 1-3.

I’m pretty sure he got fired cause of disagreements with NBC, they wanted a certain price in a certain amount of days, and Dan wasn’t willing to compromise quality for a deadline.

I really like this season when I pretend it's a different show... Seriously, it's not bad, it's just not as... nuanced. Unfortunately, its specialness is tied to Dan Harmon, the creator. The other writers can make it look, sound and act like Community, but you can hear in the voices that that is exactly what's happening... people trying to make it look, sound and act like it. Still, it's... fine.

Here comes the hate for season 4, two of my favorite episodes are in 4 and people overeact to season 4, because "messiah" harmon wasn't there which seems like whining to me.
