Greetings, Patrons!

I've just posted an IFAQ covering a few more questions from April, but it's time to move get new questions. Keep in mind that I often receive dozens of questions in a month (66 in April) and try as I might, I will not be able to answer every question. To increase the odds of getting an answer, consider the guidelines below.

  • Given the volume of questions I receive, I limit myself to answering one question per patron per month. You can ASK multiple questions, because it may be one is easier for me to answer than another—but if you ask seven questions, I'm only going to answer one of them.
  • If I can answer a question in 2-3 sentences, I may answer it here (as a reply to your comment). If I can answer a question in 2-3 paragraphs, it may be answered as an IFAQ article, but I only have time to post a few IFAQs per month. If it would take 2-3 pages to answer the question, that's a Dragonmark article, and I generally can only write one of those in a month. So in short, the longer and more complicated the question, the lower the chance that I'll have time to answer it. The last two months, I've written Dragonmarks that address multiple questions that have been asked—because there were many questions about the Eldeen Reaches, it made sense to write a big article. So if you ask questions that expand on someone else's question, it may increase the odds that you'll both get an answer.
  • If I would have to do significant research to answer a question (whether that's studying a real-world historical movement or third-party D&D supplement) that increases its effective size; even if it will only take three sentences to answer the question, if I have to do three hours of research first, it's going to go to the bottom of the slush pile.
  • I'm more likely to spend time on a complex question if the topic seems like it will interest a significant number of people. So when you're looking through the thread, like questions you'd like to see answered!

If you asked a question in a previous month that didn't get an answer, you can always ask it again, but consider as to how these guidelines apply. I do my best, but time is always the enemy. As a side note: Questions don't have to be about Eberron! I'm happy to answer questions about Gloom, Phoenix: Dawn Command, world building, Bossy the Cow, or anything else that I do.

As always, thanks for your support!

IFAQ: Working Without Lore, Sovereign Images, Nagpa and Princess Marya!

Every month I answer interesting questions posed by my Patreon supporters. Here's a few more from April! First of all, what's the nation? If it's Aundair, is there something interesting going on with everyday magic or fey? If it's Thrane, how does the faith in the Silver Flame manifest?

I had a look at a copy of Phoenix: Dawn Command a while ago! I really like the lore, the emphasis on teamwork, and the concept of balancing sacrifice/power! But the card mechanics are quite different to the RPG's my friends are used to. Do you have a quick tip on getting new players into it and keeping things fun, without them feeling pressured to optimize?

The whole idea of using cards instead of dice in Phoenix is to give the players more narrative control. With dice, you can get a good roll or a bad roll, and you don't know until you roll. With Phoenix, you can have a good hand or a bad hand, but you KNOW what you have to work with... and if you have a bad hand, you can either make necessary sacrifices to do something impressive (by burning sparks) or you can chose to take a lesser action, knowing that you'll likely draw better cards on your next turn.

Which official 5e adventure module is your favorite?

Because I always create my own stories, I haven’t actually read or played many of the official adventures. I played in a Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign and I quite enjoyed it, but I’ve never played or read Dragon Heist, ToA, Witchlight, or Storm Kings Thunder. I’ve read Strixhaven and VRGTR but haven’t actually played/run a session in either.
