Greetings, Patrons!

Life continues to be hectic. Some of the challenges I've been dealing with over the last six months are becoming more challenging... and February is a short month. I'll write a dragonmark article and run a session of Threshold, and answer as many questions as I can, but moreso than most months, I'm not going to be able to answer every question. So with the understanding that I'll do the best that I can...

  • Given the volume of questions I receive, I limit myself to answering one question per patron per month. You can ASK multiple questions, because it may be one is easier for me to answer than another—but if you ask seven questions, I'm only going to answer one of them.
  • If I can answer a question in 2-3 sentences, I will answer it here (as a reply to your comment). If I can answer a question in 2-3 paragraphs, it may be answered as an IFAQ article, but I only have time to post a few IFAQs per month. If it would take 2-3 pages to answer the question, that's a Dragonmark article, and I generally can only write one of those in a month. So in short, the longer and more complicated the question, the lower the chance that I'll have time to answer it.
  • If I would have to do significant research to answer a question, that increases its effective size. It may be that the question only takes a few sentences to answer—but if I'd have to do two hours of research and contemplation to answer it, it's going to get passed over.

As I call out above, I can't answer every question—this month especially. If you asked a question didn't get answered in a previous month, you're always welcome to ask it again, though consider how these guidelines apply! If your old question didn't get answered it may be that I just didn't get to it, or it may be that it requires research or a long answer.

I plan to write a Dragonmark article this month, and I'll post a topic poll later in the week. Current contents are The Devourer to finish up the Dark Six, The Ethereal Plane, and Quori Expanded. If you have a Dragonmark topic suggestion, you can comment here—just say "Article topic" or something like that.

As always, thanks for your support!

Hope I'm not too late, since I just subscribed, but... Who gave Khorvaire its name? Is this a Dhakaani word, or even older than that, maybe even draconic?

I've got an aberrant marked group, three players who are into this Draconic Prophesy business (Chamber vs. Court, Daughters of Sora Kell) and one who is full into the Dreaming Dark. I remember it being a thing that dragonmarks and eberron shards don't appear in Sarlona, that it's possibly invisible from the prophesy and I was struggling how to wrap this aspect into an otherwise Prophesy-heavy set of factions. Or, in short: how would you tie the Dreaming Dark into the Draconic Prophesy?

There's no canon answer. Goblins were definitely using the name when humanity arrived, but the modern goblins don't actually know where the name came from; some say it was the name of the Emperor who first laid claim to the entire continent, while others say it's an archaic word that once meant "Homeland." An academic fringe asserts that it was the dragons who gave the continents their current names and that they took steps to make sure human cultures continued to use them; this references an obscure myth referring to the continents as the "first children of Eberron", naming them as they are named today.

Personally, if I needed to make the Dreaming Dark relevant in a campaign focused on the Prophecy, I'd do it in a sideways fashion. Rather than making the Dreaming Dark an actual player in Prophetic manipulation, I'd make it that a few of the critical goals of the Dreaming Dark are Prophetic lynchpins. So the first step is to establish key goals for the Dreaming Dark: Take control of the House Deneith enclave in Fairhaven; exterminate the Kalashtar line of Hareth; have an Inspired marry Prince Oargev. It doesn't really MATTER what these goals are, and they don't have to be the most important things the Dreaming Dark is doing; it's just things where they are actively trying to accomplish something. Next, I'd look at my Prophecy players (Chamber, Court, Lords of Dust, etc) and assign them to different sides. The Chamber WANTS Oargev to marry the Inspired, while the Court wants Oargev to marry one of the player characters. So now there's two narratives in play. The players may have their own idea of what outcome they want (IE, they don't want the Dreaming Dark to take over House Deneith in Fairhaven)... and yet, they're going to run into opposition from the Prophetic player who wants it to happen, who they might under other circumstances consider an ally. And what happens when a Chamber dragon finally explains to them that it wants to let the Deneith takeover occur because it will shape a Prophetic outcome that won't actually come to pass for another century? Are they willing to go along with it, or will they defy an erstwhile ally?
