In my next post I'll be talking about Exploring Eberron and the many other projects I'm working on at the moment. But for now, I wanted to share a quick Q&A about the children of House Tarkanan, evil dragons, and more!

Lightning Round: Dragons, Tarkanan, and More!

Hi Everyone! The last two months have been a whirlwind of travel and deadlines, and that's kept me largely off the internet. In addition to traveling to GenCon, DragonCon, and XOXO, I've been working on Exploring Eberron -The Book Formerly Known As Project Raptor-and also on the game Twogether Studios is developing with the Adventure Zone.

Hmmmm...I'm not sure how this effects my planned Jack the Ripper campaign. The reveal was going to be that "Jack" was several members of a Cult of the Drafon Below, and all the sex workers were the children of House Tarkanan members (basically, they believed the Aberrant Mark represented the inevitable end of all things, and Aberrants being able to reproduce at all was an attempt by Siberys to give people false hope...also, they're insane...)

Well, by CANON the main issue is that (according to the Sharn sourcebook, page 154) House Tarkanan first appeared in Sharn in 992 YK. However, I don't see why HOUSE TARKANAN needs to be a part of this plot at all. Why not just say that the victims are people who happen to have aberrant marks (regardless of having any connection to Tarkanan)? Among other things, because they're persecuted and ostracized, aberrants are likely to be driven into the lower wards and hard times; and the Watch would dismiss the crimes, because who cares what happens to aberrants? You could also have people concluding it's simply a hate crime against aberrants. Meanwhile, I'll note that in the novel City of Towers, you have a Cult of the Dragon Below murdering aberrants because it's experimenting on dragonmarks... and again, no one but Tarkanan cares about a few dead aberrants.

So if anything, I could see House Tarkanan wanting to work with the PCs on this, not because the victims are children of House members, but because on the surface it simply appears to be violent persecution of aberrants, and that's something the house opposes.

I was actually planning to make the victims unmarked, and assuming they'd covered up their own connections to House Tarkanan, who they'd had bad experienced with (ie Tarkanan couldn't use them, so when their parents died or went to prison they were out on their asses).

Why do you specifically want a connection to House Tarkanan—especially since that connection is so deeply hidden? House Tarkanan has only been around for six years, but there have been people with aberrant dragonmarks in Sharn for centuries, and are still aberrants with no ties to Tarkanan. If the point is simply "unmarked children of aberrant parents," do you need Tarkanan to be involved?

The reason I'd be inclined to make the victims marked is because it's a more straightforward plot, highlighting the difficult life of people with aberrant dragonmarks: driven into the streets of the lower districts, and no one cares when they're killed. The motive appears simple—a murderer is targeting aberrants—and it's a chance for the characters to learn that in spite of the superstitions surrounding aberrants that these people weren't dangerous and were doubly victims. But THEN, as the PCs investigate in more depth, they discover that there's more to the murder -- that this isn't a simply hate crime, that it's a cult with a specific reason for targeting them (be it madness, or experimenting with their blood). In the process, they could end up crossing paths with House Tarkanan, who on learning of the crimes might seek the killer... who could conceivably frame the PCs to set the two groups initially at odds. Ultimately, this could create an uneasy alliance between the PCs and Tarkanan -- who are, after all, a ruthless criminal organization. But like I said, that's just where *I* would go with it.

Ah. Basically, I was trying to do the Jack-as-Conspiracy plot of From Hell, but I see your point.
