Today's post takes an extended look at another plane of existence. If you're playing Eberron this could be Mabar. If you're playing Phoenix: Dawn Command, it could be part of the Deep Dusk. Either way, it is the darkness that yearns to consume the light, a place that embodies the end of all things. Welcome to the Endless Night.

The Endless Night

And on the pedestal these words appear: 'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!' Nothing beside remains. Round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare the lone and level sands stretch far away. Like many of the planes, the Endless Night isn't one contiguous landscape.

I am late to the party, where the Endless Night is concerned... Busy life, and I am only now able to read through your recent updates. Many thanks for them. I love your ideas about Mabar: it really is interesting to have something beyond an extense of absolute blackness. One question springs to mind, though: if Mabar is indeed Death itself, then how to the Seekers argue their use of its powers. Logically, the Undying Court would be right; however, it is important to the role of the Blood of Vol that they too would have arguments. I like the idea that they do their part to contain the spread of Mabar's power in its manifest zones, but why wouldn't they agree with the Court that Mabar is basically a hostile plane and not to be meddled with?

It's like fire, or nuclear power, or electricity. It's dangerous if you don't know what you're doing; when harnessed by someone who understands it, it can be used to do good. Beyond that, consider climate change. Despite decades of study and evidence, how many people still deny that it's a threat? And this is in our world, where we have internet and extremely easy access to information. Eberron doesn't have that, and the Undying Court hasn't been actively promoting its beliefs in the Five Nations. WE have a source of absolute truth -- MABAR IS DEATH. The people of Eberron don't. Anything can be dismissed in order to maintain a useful tool. Beyond that, it's really the nuclear power issue. Any cleric of the Blood of Vol will tell you the power they wield is dangerous: but generations of their ancestors have learned how to master that power and wield it safely.
