"... a rekindling of passion - of what remained after drum and bass."
I've decided to put up for public viewing 45-or-so minutes of a 130-minute epic detailing but only scratching the surface of what went into my new record.
It was a real outpouring of love, loss, lust, hate, dread and everything in between in these seven tracks written towards the tail end of 2022. Watch as I dive into the nuances in the production and the key points that created the sound of the record.
Rundown below:
10 - Loading up stems for 'Timid Rhythm', one of three scrapped tracks from the record.
00 - Demo-ing extreme compression with Devil-Loc.
45 - Moving swiftly onto 'Canvas', the first version of 'Harsh Sun' with both interesting points and points of critique on the form, arrangement, structure.
25 - Looking into the elements in the track, and how everything was produced, but not arranged in the most tasteful way in my opinion.
00 - Moving onto the project file of 'Harsh Sun'.
00 - Break sample breakdown - note the light articulation and fast snare rolls in the break, turning into something quite metallic but mellowed using pitch-tracked filtering.
00 - A retrospect on the drum bus mixing.
00 - Thickening with parallel distortion.
00 - Layers of reverb on individual sounds as an organic form of imperfection.
40 - Bass design and mixing.
30 - Filter morphing stabs design.
35 - A touch of subtlety with the keys + bass swells, now reintroduced as an intro element.
00 - Subtle synth movements on a synth by William Light. Shouts!
30 - Closing statements. The true meaning of 'A Faint Glow of Bravery'. Finding familiarity in a piece of work that is daring.
00 - 'Oligarch' stems.
00 - Looking into each stem of the track.
00 - 'Oligarch' vocal sample breakdown.
