The story behind Mr. Miyagi often gets overlooked and it is truly sad but very important to recognize and easily one of the most shameful things in American history, easily right next to slavery. These were not freed slaves trying to endure the stigma of an entire society that is struggling to shift its cultural paradigm to accommodate them, they were not 2nd class citizen, and many were not even newly immigrants but 2nd, 3rd and beyond generations of Americans born in America. These Japanese American were full citizens, supposedly protected by the full rights of the constitution. Paid their taxes, followed the laws, many served society as doctors and law enforcement and the military. Then with the stroke of a pen, they were denied their constitutional rights, had their property ceased by the government, were rounded up and thrown into internment camps of which many thousands would die from slum like conditions and lack of medical care for years. In return they would receive a meager check, not even enough to buy back half the property taken and sold off from them let alone get back generation-built businesses for some, and certainly no replacement for lost family. Mr. Miyagi and his wife were stripped of their rights, property, and liberties and thrown into an internment camp. Mr. Miyagi still decided to sign up for the military and fight in WWII despite this. He became a war hero, received a Medal of Honor of which only 21 people would receive out of tens of millions in history, survived one of the largest and deadliest wars in the world and served a country faithfully that denied him basic human rights. In return for this, his wife and unborn child would die in the internment camp because they didn't have access to medical care which led to complications at birth killing his entire family in one go. The karate stuff is fun and entertaining and the character of Mr.Miyagi might be fictional but the actor Pat Morita was in fact put into an internment camp with his family members after narrowly escaping series medical problems from the age of 2 to 9 and the story of Mr.Miyagi was real for thousands of Japanese Americans. I love that scene showing Mr. Myagi's medal. As a veteran I know first hand how both the government and society has failed those that served in many different countries and I like that they include these aspects in shows. It is important to note and remember the history and importance of these things, even if they are bad. It also helps to emphasize how hard it might be for someone like Mr.Myagi to trust or mentor Daniel or to welcome another family that might be taken from him again.

So glad Cobra Kai is back in your regular rotation! I watched all the seasons as they were released and am really looking forward to season six. Honestly, I love the show more than the movies because it's nostalgic, dramatic, funny, and really expands the Karate Kid universe and brings it into modern times. Some of the story arcs throughout the seasons are great and there are surprises in every season too. The star of the show for me, even in season one, is William Zabka though. Daniel can't let anything go, and Johnny just wants to be left alone. Now we have Kreese coming back into the picture and that means even more of a headache for Johnny. As an aside, as someone that was involved in the punk/skinhead/mod scene in the '80s, it irks me how lopsided Hawk's mohawk is in this episode (and many others). Unless they were crust punks, that was rarely seen. One of my girlfriends back then spent a lot of time in front of the mirror making sure it was perfect. I sat in the bathroom with her once watching how meticulous she was in spraying and shaping it. Do better Hawk. At this point in the show, my favorite characters amongst the kids are Robby, Sam, Hawk, Demetri, and Aisha. It changes slightly over the seasons though. This was a decent season premiere, but I was hoping for a bit more with Kreese. Of course, that last shot implies there will be more. Can't wait to see your future CK reactions! Oh, and Joel doesn't die. Enjoy your coffee, Dak. 😉
