Hello Folks,

Earshot - what a whirlwind, one of the funniest moments & one of the most serious topics all in one episode. Mental health is rough guys & this episode shares that - what appears on the outside isn't necessarily what's going on in the inside. Jonathan was in a low spot & I'm glad that Buffy got this gift just in time to save the day. Having the gift to read minds is my worst nightmare as far as gifts go. This ep showed those hardships. The humour was needed in this episode to keep things a little lighter, Buffy's reaction to Joyce hooking up with Giles was GOLD!

They do tackle a couple tough topics in this episode. In fact, the broadcast of this episode was delayed by several months because the Columbine High School shooting took place a week before it was originally scheduled to be aired. A few bits of dialogue have not aged well, considering the worsening of school shootings in the last 20 years. It's truly ridiculous how available guns are here in the US. Anyway, on a much lighter note, I loved your reaction, especially to some of the funny bits, like where Cordy's thoughts are exactly what she says, and the Joyce/Giles sex reveal. 😄

A far bigger issue that has been thoroughly linked directly to school shootings specifically is the complete absence of proper mental health outreach and resources being made available to those with clear mental health issues and no parental oversight of those that are given treatment to be following said treatment who are at risk. Also, albeit less frequent than other issues involving the subject but still an annual issue is hearing "shooting threat not deemed 'credible' " either by police or school staff only for it to occur right after. Sick of seeing that headline. I am glad in this episode people at least believed Buffy and didn't brush it off or do a mediocre investigation until after a tragedy already happened and also that help was actually given to Jonathan.

Well, after joining your patreon I've spent a week binge-watching your full Buffy reactions (and very enjoyable it was) and have now caught up. And, apart from a couple of drive-by posts, waited until catching up before commenting! As for this episode, apart from the obvious plot etc, there's where this fits in the season. To me, this is, at least partly, a commentary on Faith. When Jonathan says "Stop saying my name like we're friends! We're not friends! You all think I'm an idiot", he could be Faith thinking about Buffy & Co. And when Buffy says "I don't think about you much at all. Nobody here really does. Bugs you, doesn't it. You have all this pain, and all these feelings and nobody's really paying attention", "Every single person down there is ignoring your pain because they're too busy with their own" and "f you could hear what they were feeling. The loneliness. The confusion. It looks quiet down there. It's not. It's deafening", they could describe Buffy, Giles and company's almost complete neglect of Faith. It wasn't intentional, even neglectful, just unfortunate. Faith had a neglected and damaging childhood. Such people often become suicidal (Jonathan) or homicidal (Faith). Granted, most do not become either, but most do not deal death every day (and we got an example of what this could do to even Buffy). If you ever watch this season again, like I've just done, with this in mind, you can see it clearly. The other comment I want to make is that there's a lot of foreshadowing in this show in casual conversation - like Angel foreshadowing his own fate at the end of season 2. You might want to look out for it.
