The Making of Under Lock & Key, page 9 (Patreon)

So, here it is, the missing script page for page 8! As you can see, it contains A LOT of page 9.

I explained this in the previous episode of this series: I wanted more drama, more tension.
Now, when you want to convey then passing of time in a comic, one way to do that, is to add panels. Even if nothing happens in 'em. It'll imply the passage of time.
Here, I didn't want time to pass, but I did want to convey that a lot of things happen in a very brief period of time. In film, I'd make it a slow-motion shot. In a comic, I add panels. You can clearly see not much happening between panels (the hand is moving INCREDIBLY slowly!), so more emphasis is put on that action.

From the script page, I also felt the little flashback panel standing out. It's an anime trope, and one I don't like. But by adding MORE flashback panels, all conveying the same message, while also adding panels (and thus: time!) to the page, puts more emphasis on the flashback AND the hand grabbing the pipe. It just meant I needed an extra page. More work.... Sigh...

On the other hand, notice the sketch page? I've obviously let go of ANY semblance of unity in techniques. Some panels are neatly sketched, some are roughly sketched, some are color sketched.

The fact is, when I was working on this page, I was getting near my self-imposed deadline. I needed things DONE, ASAP. Also, I had been drawing Delilah quite a lot by now! I found myself not even sketching her, starting right with lining, which is why her panel seems so neat. Same goes for the hand grabbing the pipes. I know how to draw hands, I don't always need sketches for that. This saved a lot of time, but I can only do this when I'm really in a flow.

So yeah, nothing more to say on this one. I'd say it's the crux of the chapter, probably, which is why I wanted it done well. I hope I succeeded, and leave you to judge it! :-)
