It's implied that Uncle Jimmy works in organized crime, I think.

Nicholas

And... now it makes sense why Carmy didn't talk to his family for years. Lol

Mahni Alizadeh

happy yall are back, hope everything is ok!

Hollow

Been waiting for this one since y'all started it. If this episode and everyone in it doesn't win awards I will riot. Perfection. Look forward to seeing the discussion.

so much star power this ep but jon bernthal as mikey adds so much gravity in his performance. the pantry scene with carmy is so gut wrenching theres lots to dig into but i really appreciate the added context and characterization for natalie. it makes a lot of sense why natalie would gravitate towards someone like pete who’s kind of goofy and aloof but is earnest, emotionally stable, and above all else nothing like her family

This is one of the most impactful episodes of television I've seen in quite a while and hits too close to home for me in places. I think it does a brutally good job at displaying what being in a highly dysfunctional family environment can be like. Donna is a great portrayal of an alcoholic, manipulative, mentally unwell narcissist. In almost the same breath she complains about no one caring about her or supporting her and then lashes out at anyone who dares try. As is often the case in families where there is an abusive mother it is the daughter in Natalie (Sugar) who bears the brunt of the mothers ire, nothing she can say or do is ever right. Natalie knows that she is (regrettably) the source for a lot of her mothers mania. Notice how her lip gets more bloody as she is chewing it throughout the episode, such a great detail. Also the way the camera shows her just after she's asked Donna if she's ok at the table makes her look smaller like a scolded child trying to disappear which I also thought was very effective. Mikey was obviously already gone by this stage, not physically yet but he's already well into his addiction and others know it as hinted at a few times although it's clear even before any drug use he was probably already a complicated character. When he cries after Carmy shows him the drawing of his idea for the restaurant it breaks me because you know he knows it will never happen and his insecurities overwhelm in his most manic moments at the table when Uncle Lee saying he's nothing rings through him repeatedly. A remarkable episode, one that is anxiety inducing in the extreme but also important and well placed in this story for understanding further who Carmy, Natalie, Richie and the rest of the character are and what motivates them. I won't spoil the next episode in any way except to say that fortunately the writers give us one of the most peaceful and feel good episodes as a palate cleanser following this grind.

I'd go a step further and say it's so good at capturing the characters, their motivations, and countless little details, it feels like they filmed this and hammered it out before the show was even started. The star power, I think, has the effect of giving us some familiarity (not necessarily good) and emotion regarding these characters. It's like a shortcut to getting into Carmy or Sugar's head with people they've known all their lives, because actors and actresses we appreciate in general become people the characters appreciate. While characters tied to anxiety (Odenkirk) or more complicated sets of roles (Jamie Lee Curtis) get to carry that into the show.

I didn't want to be a douche(who asks for The Wire but it's not time) so I checked what time it is in Serbia compared to South Africa and holy shit, our timezones are aligned.

Now that you've watched this episode, when you get a chance, check out the YouTube video "Why The Bear Gets In Your Head" (Link: https://youtu.be/Lca_XEoO4b8). Really interesting insight into why the episode was especially effective.

This episode is a horror movie.
