Yes, the language thing is a problem, but it won't be as prevalent in the future. It would have been kind of good if there was a marker in the sub when which language is spoken (with square brackets for example).

And about accuracy: Vikings squeezed 150 years of history (800 - 950) into 30 years, and changed a lot of it. Vinland Saga (1000 -) is more accurate and pays attention to the correct years for battles, wars and probable intrigues. Even well-known characters in the time fight on the right sides. The author has done a good job. Problem is, though, that you should be careful with googling some names, battles and co, otherwise you might read spoilers.

My favorite part of this episode is when the main character is saved by a kind woman only to repay her by having her and everyone she knows killed, plus having her daughter sold into slavery or raped to death by his friends. But he felt a little bad about it which makes Thorfinn a very nuanced and well-written character.

I think you nailed in the discussion what makes this show so excellent. You would think a Viking anime would focus on the action, but Vinland Saga truly shines in the quiet moments.

Everyone has their own preference on how to pronounce his name, but every comment has been one or the other, so I'll explain properly. The way you said his name in this video has been your best attempt so far, and is the closest you will probably get to say it the way they say it in the show. If you say the name how you would read the name in English, it is pronounced "Ask-uh-lad", and that's how I, personally, say it because I would hear the English version in my head as I read the name in the subtitles, subconsciously blocking out the sound I hear as they speak it. The name has an important meaning though, (you couldn't possibly guess why his name is significant, but it's a borderline spoiler to say even that, however, context is everything), and the other way to pronounce his name is "Ash-uh-lad", which is basically how you are saying it, and that is a better way to say it if you care about the story behind the name. The final statement I want to make, I'm not 100% sure about, but I'm pretty sure his name is spoken slightly differently throughout the show, based on whose saying it and what region they're currently in.

Curious, the lack of woods in Iceland... lol, this show doesn't introduce a child to the forest, it drops him into it without a parachute, and expects him to land on his feet in a full sprint. Rabid animal is probably the best description for Thorfinn in this season, which is heartbreaking, but the show takes you along for the ENTIRE journey. The shock you had from the time skip in this episode will pale in comparison to the reaction you'll have when you see him in the trailer for the second season.

They will probably not see the second trailer and start directly with the episodes, since the reaction of 1x24 will be at the time when 8 episodes of the second season are already released. After all, they didn't watch the trailer for Mob Season 3.

FUN FACT: Don't know if this has been mentioned, but the name Askeladd is known by literally everyone in Norway as the main character of many Norwegian folk tales. In the tales he is a smaller guy who can't compare to his brothers in terms of size and strength, but in their adventures he always comes out on top due to his smarts. He's smart and conniving and tricks his enemies into bad situations. Much like Askeladd did with Thors in the show (and kinda like he's doing with Thorfinn here). Which is why I think it's very likely Askeladd in the show is based on Askeladd in the fairy tales. The word means "one who blows on the ashes". But the fairy tales have been around since the viking age, when he was called Kolbitr, which directly translates to "Coal biter". ABOUT THE PRONOUNCIATION: The way Milena yells it at 33:55 is perfectly pronounced.
