Yea what Daemon did in this episode is the one thing I will never defend him on, strangely enough though I do understand why it happened and watching the cast interviews especially Emma’s about that scene I can get the full picture but still NOPE it should have never happened. It’s really strange how the writers have decided to handle Daemon as a character because he never touches Rhaenrya in the books, he never kills his first wife in the books, and he’s a great and loving father to ALL his children in the books and yet the writers have decided to change all of that in order to make him seem more bad that what he actually is. And while I didn’t like that they made him kill his first wife, it was a change that I could get behind, this for some reason feels like more of a violation of his character and making him a bad father to his daughters feels like more of a violation, I can’t really explain why but it just does. Also I would like to add that I DID in fact side with Daemon throughout this episode up until that point because I thought Rhaenrya was being naive.

All in all I enjoyed this first season just little nitpicks here and there about how the characters are being written but overall it was a very strong first season and I can’t wait for season 2. Luke’s death hurt a lot because he really was just a sweet kid trying to be brave for his family. Also the fact that both Rhaenrya and Jace are going to blame themselves for this makes it even sadder. Whose ready to meet Cregan Stark!!!! I just know you ladies are going to love him, and there’s plenty of other fun characters to come that you ladies will enjoy.

You know GRRM has been heavily involved in the writing right? That Daemon is his favorite character? Both GRRM and the other people writing the show have expressed surprise that people think Daemon hasn't been this bad the whole time. And I'm pretty sure he knows what his own characters are like. They've been showing that pretty clearly since the first episode, and reaffirmed it in the one where he took Rhaenerya to a brothel for the sole purpose of destroying her reputation in the hopes that it would allow him to marry her (and not just out of desire for her either - this episode shows how much he still wants to rule). The book in which you're claiming Daemon "never touched her" wouldn't have had a detail like that to begin with. It's a book told through various perspectives, all with their own agenda, and largely remarking on events for which they were not present, long after they occurred. So yeah, him strangling her isn't in Fire and Blood because that book doesn't show us their private lives by the very nature of the kind of book it is. And the picture that gets painted of Daemon as a husband in that book isn't exactly great either.

I don't think Daemon really wants to sit on the throne himself. Daemon is a Targaryen through and through. He's proud of his family's history and heritage. And you know what, the words of House Targaryen are not fire and blood for nothing. The power and fear of dragons is the main reason why the Targaryens are in power. And I think Daemon is just tired, after all his time as king Viserys did nothing against their enemies, now Rhaenyra is not ready to act either. Daemon warned Viserys about the Hightowers years ago and nothing was done. Not even when Viserys himself found out what Otto was actually up to. And who would have thought, it happened, the Hightowers seized power. And Rhaenyra is suddenly extremely unwilling to do anything about it. I was very confused myself about Rhaenyra's views in this episode. How could they ever trust the terms that the Hightowers put forward? In the last episode, Otto wanted to kill Rhaenyra and her whole family! The piece of paper from Alicent that Otto handed over has lost all meaning from the moment she usurped Rhaenyra. The war has long since begun and has already been passed on to the next generation. We got a perfect demonstration of that in the finale. Yes, it was an accident, but Aemond made a conscious decision to chase Luce with his giant dragon. What could possibly go wrong? There is no future where these two families can live together peacefully, too much has happened for that! When Rhaenyra asked Daemon to marry her, her words were like "Help me fight the Greens" and "Defend my claim to the throne". Isn't that what he was trying to do? So yes, of course Daemon went too far. But it's totally in character for him to snap in this situation. He was never Prince Charming in my eyes and he is still my favourite character. And I think Rhaenyra is strong enough to handle Daemon. She wasn't even that bothered with the situation. And she basically won the argument in the end.

He hasn't been involved in the writing at all, he said so in his podcast. He is listed as a writer because he wrote the book the show is based off of. He also said that most of his ideas about the first season were not used like how he wanted to start the first episode with Jahearys, Baelon, and Aemon still alive but they said no. Also one of the writers had to call and talk to him about Daemon after she received so much backlash about the way she writes and views his character, and she mentioned after talking with him she had a better understanding of who Daemon is, that let's you know that he has no say in how they write this show.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

Yes I agree with your points exactly, but I don't know how to explain it, but it still just felt like a violation of his character, but yes you are absolutely correct in everything you said, it's clear though that the first responder doesn't understand that.

Also Matt has clearly stated in all of his interviews that Daemon has never wanted the throne, and even in this episode, nothing he did proved that he wanted the throne, more so it proved that he's trying to protect his family. The book does show Daemon as a good husband though, to Laena and Rhaenrya, it talks about how he was always in the room when they were giving birth and the one time he wasn't was with Laena, but he flew back as fast as he could and brought Maesters with him, and was with her when she died. Also I never said Daemon was a good guy, but there is a clear difference between hurting people you don't give a fuck about and hurting the people he loves, up until this point we have never seen Daemon be physically violent toward anyone he loved, so yes this came out of nowhere. George also never said Daemon was a bad guy, in fact the reason he loves Daemon so much is that he is a mixture of both dark and light in equal measures. He is EQUAL in both light and dark, he balances out and so far the show has managed to only show the dark, and that's where people are frustrated with, believe me I have no problems with Daemon killing people, in fact I actively root for it, but I love characters that family is where they draw the line, that family is their code, and in the books that is exactly Daemon, in the show too I believe even if I don't like what he did in this episode, I still believe it all comes down to family for Daemon.

The description of Daemon and Rhaenyra's marriage before the war is only like 5 sentences long in the book and doesn't give us any clue on how he treats her. I won't go into details about their relationship later for obvious reasons but I highly doubt you can find even a single example of Daemon being a good husband to Rhaenrya. The book is an in-universe history book writter by people that weren't alive during the time. It generally doesn't give us a lot of details on interpersonal relationship. I also think Deamon's portrail in the show is much more generous than in the book. Book Deamon is a massive pedophile and brothel owners keep the youngest and most innocent child prostetues in reserve for him to take their virginity. I'm glad they decided to make changes for the show.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

There are numerous indications in the book that show Daemon was a good husband to Rhaenrya, first off like I mentioned, he was with her for every single one of her births of their children. Also I can’t get into spoilers but he makes sure she is always safe and there is very clear moment of this in the book that will happen in the show later so I can’t spoil it. Also before they were even married he would fly to Dragonstone all the time, him and Laena to check on her and Laenor, and she would fly to Driftmark to see them. His description in the book is exactly what I said it was, Made of both light and dark in equal parts. Daemon is not a good guy, but he’s not a monster either, and it’s his connection to the ones he loves that keeps him from being a monster and make no mistake Rhaenrya is someone he loved.

Lychee

The book doesn't even say that he was present for the birth of his own children with her let alone the once she had with Harwin. I just confirmed this with my kindle edition. The book mentions that for Luke's birth both Harwin and Laenor were present (No mention of Daemon). It doesn't give any details about her other birth'. I think you might confuse this with Rheanyra visting Laena while she gives birth to Daemon's daughters. I think the book is pretty clear that Rheanyra is in love with Daemon which is hardly surprising since he groomed her since the time she was a small child. It is explicitly mentioned that she was enamored by him by the time she was 8 years old. I do not believe the book clearly shows that Deamon reciprocates these feelings. His ambition for the throne however is mentioned multiple times.

2022-12-31 00:12:53 daemon choking rhaenyra was the hotd equivalent of d&d making Jamie rape Cersei in front of their dead son...for NO REASON....except to remind the audience that their beloved character is not a good guy by...destroying their only redeeming trait it's ridiculous actually. loved the acting this episode when it comes to writing, there were many inconsistencies...the show has done so many changes from the book it shouldn't even be called an adaptation more of a fanfic if anything. I hope you guys watch succession as your new show <3

The book has tons of conflicting events though. The whole point is that the book is an inaccurate portrayal of history.

So it has a reason then? For the exact reason to remind the viewer we have to do with grey and morally conflicted characters. Thats always a good feature. Besides that, one of the reasons the viewer dislikes Daemon here, more than in other scenes, is the fact we see a lot of Rhaenyra and sympathize with her. If we would have seen more of his former wife, we would have related to her cruel death more and disliked him even further. Good written character tho in the end :) Edit: I didnt read the books tho, and didnt know he never lays hands on her or kills his wife. Thats obviously another point then, which doesnt make his character in the show less well written obviously. But i can understand that you dislike the fact, hes changed too much from the books.

the books are unreliable true but tbe changes they have made in the show are too drastic to pass it off as "you can't trust the misogynistic maesters". the age changes, the character changes, the erasure of certain dynamics, and the inconsistencies that come with these changes are ruining the show for me i fear. i'd be fine if they changed it and written it well, but they don't and characters end up seeming very inconsistent and stupid
