Orr Malus explained the issue with Ling wanting immortality very well. The one thing I will add is that Ling and Mei actually do want immortality for themselves rather than for the emperor. The way Ling explained it in a previous episode (Envoy from the East I believe) is basically that all the children of the emperor are competing to be named heir to the throne right now since the emperor is dying. And if one of those kids turned up with immortality, they'd win, hands down. This means that A) they would be able to ensure their clan was taken care of because they would be emperor, and B) it ensures that a rival clan that would potentially harm their people doesn't gain power. So essentially both Ling and Mei are trying to secure the throne by obtaining immortality in order to ensure the safety and prosperity of their respective clans (the Yao clan for Ling and the Chang clan for Mei). Also, I have to say I'm absolutely loving your reactions. You both react the exact same way I did to these characters the first time I watched it, and I love getting to watch it again with you!
