PS

Yes I fully agree with you, Misa-Misa is very sexualized. I love Death Note but that part always irked me. There are various moments of misogyny throughout the show. And while we’re on the subject, I hate what happened to Historia (and Ymir) in AoT

PM

when have animes shied away from sexualizing the female characters.. it's a common trope..

Mati D.

I loved that you used the Ryuk coming back thumbnail instead of the last shot with Light and Misa, everyone uses that one.

JoloPolo

The next reaction is gonna be epic AAA

Anonymous

Misa probably still has a decently sized lifespan left since she gained the lifespan of Gelus when he died which could have been a few centuries.

JoloPolo

Dude I recommend you to put a big "SPOILERS CAP 25" for the patreons that go along with LM with the series, also... Spoilers 25+ Death Note They show Ryuk writing Light's name at the end, how cunning the girls are, even if the scene is not explicit they will end up realizing the spoiler, it would be interesting if they react to that scene but I would recommend that they see it at the end of the series

sand_fl

someone calls rem a monster, l&m: LOOK HOW PRETTY SHE IS / I LOVE HER, SHE'S GORGEOUS jdhdsjj i do really have a blast watching your reactions

Vasto

The point is about "oversexualized" misa, even if its oversexualized, its that such a bad thing? i mean its based on seinen manga for young adult man, there are far far worse anime/manga in that aspect, this is very lightly oversexualized, for example shoujo manga for women had very oversexualized boys/man because its for women, shounen for example tend to be more "neutral" but still that's also part of Japanese culture. There are plenty of western movies with oversexualized characters both man and women, its just our reality some people are bland other are pretty and tend to show much more or just brag about their looks, that's reality. I'm personally much more into realism no matter if its romance, drama, sexualization, murder, crime its just make things more exciting and interesting, if you make everything "friendly" for everyone it will stop interesting anyone, it will just become bland, that's why anime/manga is on such rise last years, and knowing Japanese culture it wouldn't change soon or if ever, also whole "oversexualization" for me its just someone's opinion, i don't think you can instantly label it as something "bad" there is huge community that seeks such things.

Anonymous

I'm surprised I need to say this but yes, sexualizing is a bad thing. I don't care if some cultures do it, it's still bad. Also you would be wrong on the realism part because Misa's character is pretty absurd even by reasonable standards. She's so dumbed down and sexualized to the point where it breaks immersions sometimes. Misa is not really a person, she's more like a stupified sexual charicature of a woman.

Markub El Jaden

I hate however spoiled you that Light is regaining his memories in this episode, people just can't let things play out on their own.

Anonymous

Nobody did. They captured Higuchi with the book last episode so it makes sense to think that Light could come into contact and get the memories in this one.

Jaqcues

KEIKAKU DOORI!!!

Anonymous

Exactly, her lifespan is probably longer than an oak tree

Branflakes

I love the shot of Light and Misa hugging with Ryuk in the background at the end. I want a big poster of it

Misa’s character is not “over-sexualized.” That’s just her character and the way she was written. It’s almost like people in modern society just want an excuse to complain about something (if they can’t find something in real life, they WILL find something in a piece of fiction). Notice how it’s mostly women who do these things… Then they wanna call it “misogyny” and that men wrote the story this way as means of showing prejudices against women. This is gynocentrism at its finest. The world operates on gynocentrism, male disposability, and cultural misandry. Gynocentrism is a form of sexism in which the male sex is often referred to as “inferior” to the female sex. Who built and maintained all you see when you drive down the road? Men. Whose lives were trafficked, exploited, and disposed of in war for women’s and the state’s safety and welfare? Men’s! Men were socially conditioned by women & the state to be the providers & protectors (human sacrifices) of women & the state. These were expectations placed upon men by women & the state. That’s literally brainwashing & socially conditioning common men into HUMAN SACRIFICE. If men are privileged, then why do men pay the vast majority of alimony, asset division and child support? Why do men get far harsher punishments for equal crimes? Why have men always worked the most dirty, dangerous, life shortening, life threatening jobs? Why do men live the shortest lives? Why was there no ‘female only draft’? Why was there no ‘women last in the life boats’ policy? Why do women get the majority of state & federal spending on health, education, and welfare when men have always paid the majority of taxes? Women are the privileged now and always have been. They vote for and support those men who throw common men under the bus for women’s and her state husband’s benefit. Women didn’t have the right to vote in the past because men were socially conditioned by women and the state to care for women as if women were children — because women are the equivalent of GROWN CHILDREN! Men were expected to lay down their lives for women and the state through “provision and protection”. Once again — these were social expectations placed upon men by women and the state. If women want to own and rule over civilization, then why don’t they just build, maintain, fight and die for said civilizations, like men did, rather than colonizing and appropriating the achievements of men & masculinity? Why are men expected to protect themselves from rape and sexual assault while women expect protection from the same via the sacrifice of men and masculinity? Why can’t women defend themselves and stop demanding that men sacrifice themselves for women’s safety and welfare? Why do women march upon the streets, towns, cities, states and nations men built and maintained and demand dominion over what women did not build nor maintain? Why do women colonize and appropriate all of the institutions with which men built, maintained, fought and died?

Danny

Actually Misa prob had a long ass lifespan after getting Gelus's lifespan. I would imagine Gelus prob had a long one sincne Shinigami get the lifespan of the humasn they kill. So for example, if Gelus had 1000 years of life, given to Misa. She cut it in half once meaning she has 500. And now cut in half again, 250. And this is just a random number but no doubt Misa has a lifespan longer than any human

PKS

You could shorten your text as it is going in round. But I understand what you are saying. Our human society and civilization have their backbone set on thousands of men sacrificing their lives, family and happiness.

Hannah N

Shinigami are lazy and seem to kill just enough people to stay alive, she probably got 100 years max

The comment section is a big yikes for me. Mainly because I know neither side will convince the other and each side will just turn bitter towards the other. Except me. I'm going to just overlook the chaos smugly since I can appreciate/understand both sides and have sympathy to both.

Anonymous

So I don't think this is really a spoiler, but the writer of the Death Note manga already explicitly stated what Light's life would've been like if he'd never gotten the note book, which I imagine has a pretty big influence on whether someone considers him a "tragic" character or not.

ML9

i think both sides make good points, but i personally don't let sexualization or oversexualization in anime stop me from enjoying a great story. not worth getting mad over. they're drawings lol

Melkor

Same for me I just try to ignore it and don’t let it bother me so I can enjoy the show. Edit: Not saying it’s a good thing it’s definitely a negative to the show I just don’t let it bother me.

Regarding the whole sexualization debate: I think it's funny how both sides are just throwing insults at each other while describing the opposition as retarded and subhuman. All of you are engaging in the same behavior. Reminds me of online arguments between the radical right and radical left, they keep screaming at each other without realizing their ideologies are equally nonsensical and extreme. I don't think anyone in this comments section "won" the debate.

Anonymous

A piece of advice for Lola and Milena: Try to avoid politics at all costs. This comments section is a first glimpse at the inevitable result. All the interesting discussions regarding character writing, wordlbuilding, and story analysis will cease to exist and give way to ignorant people screaming at each other.

Anonymous

Don't take this the wrong way but I find the idea of equating people who're just saying "hey it's kinda shitty for Misa to be sexualized this way, maybe we can do better" to people who're saying with a straight face that they see nothing wrong with it to be quite an empty-headed take. Have you read the comments here? The shit that some people are saying will have you think we're living in 17th century. Unbelievable gall. If you can't come to the conclusion that Misa, after all we've seen so far, is being portrayed in a very specific way then something went wrong. Honestly.

Anonymous

Death Note is a pretty political show, at least as it pertains to the morality of right and wrong. Saying "keep politics out" is very silly since it's been political from episode 1 when Light picked up the book. The show WANTS you to ask questions and ponder on these things. To get involved in the discussion.

Danny

Why everyone getting so heated over Misa being a brainless character when we got Matsuda, the male equivalent here whos even dumber than her? The show focuses on literally 2 characters only. Light and L. The others are barely relevant. Misa is dumb no doubt but i dont understand why everyone so heated over that. Is her being dumb a statement that women are dumb? Matsuda is dumb too. Does that mean anything too? I dont get how Misa's stupidity is such a big issue here. Not every character is smart. In fact, I would argue Misa isnt a dumb character but blinded by love. She showed that she has good manipulative skill, making Higuchi confess on tape, and even avoiding capture of being 2nd Kira with the tapes and all. She isnt dumb by any means but simply blinded by love and overshadowed by the fact there are two 300 iq geniuses in the room. She might not be smarter than these two but among everyone else in the room, she has the most skill and wit. So thats that. If a woman is drawn to be sexy, thats for fanservice. I dont understand how thats a problem. There are many animes that do this and while sometimes I agree they push it far but fanservice doesnt equate to anything. If they show hot men all the time I dont rly care. Id still watch the show if it has an interesting plot. Its only when the fanservice covers alot of the screentime that it gets annoying. In fact, I didnt even notice or remember any fanservice in Death Note until everyone here starts arguing about it. That means shit was so irrelevant against the bigger picture.

Because while Matsuda is stupid, he still gets his time to shine, especially towards the end. He isn't left in the dust for positive scenes. Misa doesn't get any of this. She's just sort of fucked in that department. She started out well by discovering Light's identity and that was basically it. She peaked and crashed like the stock market for the rest of the show. Any other time when she makes a breakthrough on her own, it just HAS to by seducing someone like Higuchi, because that's all she has going for her. She isn't smart or strong or noteworthy in any departament besides looks. That's the limit of her potential, the ceiling of her character.

Since we all hate each other now, I think it's about time to quote Barney the Dinosaur: "I love you, you love me We're a happy family With a great big hug And a kiss from me to you Won't you say you love me too? I love you, you love me We're best friends like friends should be With a great big hug And a kiss from me to you Won't you say you love me too?" Is everyone feeling a little bit better now?
