As much as I enjoy this show, I am a little bothered by how women are represented in it now that I am a little older. It reminds me that Japan is still a strongly patriarchal society.

I don't think that the Death Note has some curse that turns you evil. I think is more like the power that it gives brings a side of you that you otherwise is to afraid to let loose

Emori

the misa and light dynamic is fucking WILDDD like this episode had me fucking dead i swearrrrrr

BBT

true. The main issue is that there is not to much female main characters. Misa aside that is purposely "dumb", the other main character so far was Misora Naomi. And she really deserved more.

I kinda feel like the death note only changes you because it gives you a means to an end. Like what do we become once we have like the power of a god literally. Light always thought the world was rotten and felt like he was one of the best people out there because of his popularity, look, intelligence and everything surrounding his hate toward people committing crime (therefore not being the best version of themselves let's say). So he quickly felt like he was too good for this world kind of, and the death note gave him like the ultimate reason to believe this since he has now the power to be the judge the jury and the executionner over humans' lives. I feel like for Misa it's more or less the same. She was frustrated and hopeless because her parents' killer was about the get away with it when Kira killed him. So as you said, she had fate in him, she believed he was capable of bringing actual justice because the official one couldn't deliver what she needed. And as soon as she had the death note, it gave her to power to do the same. She could've kill the killer herself if she had it earlier. So now that she has the power to act against "injustice" she sides with Kira who is the representation of justice in her eyes. I also feel like she is a character that represents all the people that are crazy in love with a serial killer. Like it's known that a lot of women were obsessed with guys like Ted Bundy or Wayne Gacy because of the aura they had and everything revolving around their serial killers status. I feel like Misa kinda represent the girl that finds doom into her obsession with the somehow charismatic serial killer aura Light has, and everything he stands for in her eyes.

The Death Note "corrupts" you the same way a gun "corrupts" you. It's just a tool. What you do with it is up to you. It doesn't mind control the host, nor influence decisions. People have had the note before and no one wrote as many names as Light has. Light is just a piece of shit and that's that. He didn't look evil before because he simply didn't have the book.

*Light is just a piece of shit and that's that* you are very stupid if you cant see anything beyond that

Misa has to be my least favorite thing about this show tbh. I know it’s an unpopular opinion but I like the later parts better.

It's Ilike an old saying ‘If You Want to Test a Man’s Character, Give Him Power’ Before, he had nothing; now, he's powerful

Great episode, and yes, she's innocent, she's just a normal girl and have that tragedy in life and got this power, this platonic love for the guy who killed the murdered of her parents, and that's all, one of the first things she said to him was "make me your gf"...

amir.cricket

about if kira should have such a decision or powers let me ask you this, does our law system and judges at courts should have the power to decides over human destiny, as life or death situations? ~also i dont agree with the sentense that any killed is a psycho.. if we look from historic prespective our age of mercy and overprotection would look like psycho beheavious to any person that lived 300 years ago or before that

tom

I'm pretty sure if you've seen earlier reactions that neither of them support capital punishment. Also to compare one individual to a whole system is a poor comparison. It's like saying a dictatorship and a democracy are the same, because after all big decisions still get made in the end

The issue of Light's morality comes down to an old philosophical question, doesn't it? Did having the Death Note (meaning power) change him, or did it just give him the freedom to be who he already was?

I watched Death Note 8 years ago. And this rewatch with the two of you is absolutely wild. The pacing of this anime is crazy. So much fun listening to your reactions. Thanks for this!

Could someone please explain to me the second information card in the middle of the episode? "The Death Note will be rendered useless if the victim's name is misspelled four times". So, take for example in the very first episode where the motorcyclist who attempt to attack the woman (ie. the first person Light uses the note against) had his name written over a dozen times, each with a different spelling, as Light had to discern what the correct spelling was. Does this rule mean the Death Note is rendered useless if the name is misspelled four times *after* a correct spelling? If someone could clarify that for me I'd be grateful.

I still thing Light is a "lesser evil" of course he's "bad" and have huge ego but imagine someone with actual thirst of power and blood getting death note killing anyone who go in their way, absolute innocent people/children etc that would be a "true" psycho in my opinion, light is one to of course but in much lesser extent. Intelligent people tend to be "evil" many irl psycho/serial killers had high IQ and deduction skills, killing mindlessly and killing in a vigilante way "evil" ones is a huge difference in my opinion.

Thamor

You finally understood. Death Note is just dark comedy show =)

It's impossible to talk about Death Note without empathy deficient people showing up and defending Light tbh, best to just ignore those comments

I think it's pretty brilliant for the authors to not show Light's backstory/childhood, as you're not supposed to empathize with him.
