Ging didn't mess up Gon. Mito says right from the start that "you're just like you're father". Gon, like Ging, loves his friends, loves seeing them happy, but will also selfishly put his own goals ahead of his love ones' needs. We've seen Killua suffer a few times from Gon's selfishness. Gon, like most Hunters, is also a little psychotic, and we catch glimpses of that from time to time. The one that sticks with me is how Gon's eyes go dark when he tells Meleoron that it'll be easier for him to end Meleoron if he finds out he's lied to him. The last words Gon said to Pitou before his transformation was "liar" I love Ging, and I don't consider him a deadbeat dad. A deadbeat father isn't just absent from his kid's life, he also isn't providing for his kid and the mother/caretaker. Ging knew he couldn't raise a kid, and left Gon in the best possible situation. The only thing Ging could provide Gon was training to be a Hunter if Gon chose that path. Plus, a lot of what people read as Ging being callous is actually him being shy and fearing emotional intimacy. At the end of Greed Island, Elena recalls how Ging chose to send Gon to Kite if he used Accompany, because he's shy and couldn't bear meeting his son in the company of other people. As it turns out, he had to meet his son in front of the ENTIRE Hunter's Association, which was his worst nightmare. He couldn't truly bond with Gon until they were alone, and he wanted it to be in a place that was truly meaningful. He did do Mito dirty though, I agree with that.

That Meruem and Komugi shot at the end is just rubbing salt on the wound damn

It's honestly crazy the lengths people will go to to try to justify Ging's behaviors
