In Shintō, the traditional religion of Japan, significant emphasis is placed on purity and cleanliness. Impurity (Kegare) is considered spiritually polluting and can arise from various sources, including contact with blood, any form of death, and illness. These impurities are believed to affect not only the individual but also the community to which they belong. When a place or person is impure, it is believed to become susceptible to the influence of malevolent spirits called Tatarigami, as mentioned by Fuji-san in the episode. To address this, Shintō rituals often include purification to cleanse individuals and spaces of these impurities and restore spiritual harmony. Several movies by Studio Ghibli, such as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, also explore these Shintō concepts

The best way to get to me is to start off a storyline lighthearted and end it in devastating fashion, that's the pheasant story to me. You chuckle at it throughout and in the end it's like the show mocks you for thinking it would stay funny.
