For me, what's make Jhon a good character, is that it's easier for us (being raised in the occidental culture) to relate to him, than Mariko or Toronaga who are part of this new word . Also the treaty that Jhon was talking about, is the Treaty of Tordesillas but also the treaty of Saragossa which completed the first one to include territories found in the Pacific Ocean such as Japan or the Philipines.
