Ep 4 and 5 of the ovas have more background on ouken that would definitely be interesting for you to react to. Ep 5 only has more info on ouken in the first half, but you can watch the whole episode without worrying about spoilers.

I can only speak from my own experience but I only watched all 10 episodes of The Treasure Chest of Courage after I watched all of season 1 and I don't think it hurts the viewing experience at all. Plus, that way you don't have to avoid certain parts of it just to avoid being spoiled for season 1. It did air completely after season 1 after all.
