While this anime does have an issue occasionally with comedic beats being mistimed and misused during serious moments, I don’t think knuckle admitting that he wasn’t that close to shoot is one of them. I think that’s reinforcing how pure hearted he is, that in this life and death mission he took this big risk for someone he didn’t previously even like that much. I think his compassion is just enhanced during the mission because they don’t know if they are getting out or not. Just like how shoot’s courage shot up as well. That being said other aspects of the scene was bit silly and maybe could have used slight constraint on the tonal whiplash. The animation was popping off though.
