Most divisive episode of the series. Some loved it, some hated it. It may not have seemed important while you were watching it but it's one of the few times in the series where Walt lets us in on how this is affecting him. When he was drugged, he finally gave up the front. He let his guard down and spoke on his regrets. I see both sides arguments on this episode. It was definitely very slow. But don't worry, it's the only one of it's kind in the series and the rest of this season finishes up very strong.

Yeah this episode is either loved or hated. It was a "bottle" episode (meaning all filmed in one location) sometimes for budget or whatever other reasons, writers need more time etc. If I recall, Stranger Things also had a bottle episode that feels out of place compared to the rest of the show. I think this episode is more enjoyable if you look at it through the lens of "what are they trying to tell us?" People have a lot of theories about what the fly is a metaphor of. I personally think it's his conscience about killing Jane which he can't forget. When he speaks about the "perfect moment" to die, it would have been before killing Jane which caused the contamination in his life, as well as Jessies. You could say it's Walt himself that is the contaminant ruining the environment around him. But yes you are correct the episode isn't needed lol. Don't worry the writing gets masterful from here on out :)
