I think Kurama's struggle was him trying to juggle 3 different personality's and it was taking its toll on him. So he decided to leave yo ko behind so he could focus more on his human side with his family.

So, I think this is a good time to point out that this tournament and arc isn't really about the fights. It's about the philosophy behind their fights. They are all excessively powerful. If any of them were truly driven, they'd be near invincible. But they are trying to figure out what they want in life. What purpose they live for and what future they really want. Yusuke turning this power struggle into a tournament of individuals was the best thing he could have done, because any of them COULD rule demon world, but this frees them of their allegiances to territories or allies, and it forces them to face and understand WHY they would want that, and what comes afterward.
