Damn thanks for keeping it real but it's crazy how tastes can differ. I've watched alot of anime and I only saw YuYu a couple years ago but since then its my favorite anime & this is like my 5th rewatch. The show just really connected with me. I'm watching the shippuden war arc & its like nyquil to me.

Hahaha that’s the beauty of art though we connect to different things more based on our lives experiences.

now that I've seen this anime few times (last time when i was high school over 10yrs ago), i can honestly say that all the hype for the dark tournament was strictly nostalgia for people in my age group that watched this on tonami early 2000's..as a kid i loved the dark tournament and it was my favorite arc but as an adult the last arc is definitely leaps and bounds better and has most of what your looking for from yusuke ..it takes a while but they definitely expand the world and make things more interesting

Enkyri

I think people enjoy the dark tournament so much, because it introduces Yoko Kurama & displays Hiei's darkness dragon. These are CRAZY power-ups from where the characters began. Yusuke as well.

NuxTaku actually has a video breaking down what the actual themes are of the story. Everything Adonis is feeling is purposeful. I’d recommend watching it after you finish the story that might give you a better perspective because I just feel Adonis is asking all the right questions without realizing those very questions are the driving point and theme for the show and all it’s respective characters.

but yea, the fight hype is mainly nostalgia. Definitely a top recommendation for reanimating. Writing fights if I remember right was hard for Tagashi while writing YuYu and it was part of what inspired Nen as a concept to help organize a fight system he always clearly envisioned but couldn’t execute properly in YuYu because it feels more made up as you go vibes

Damn. 5 out of 10? I guess it differs for every person. From my perspective, this show keeps it real. People react in the way they would in real life. Sometimes loves develops in the way it did with Shizuru and Sakyo. Yusuke cares as much as he does about Genkai, because she's the only adult in his life that bothered to get to know him and care about his future. It has nothing to do with how long he knew her, nor her having special tender moments with him. The fights are realistic. The only people that pull techniques out of their ass are people that lived long enough to develop them. Yusuke's "goal" is the same that was hinted in the first episode. He decided in a split moment to give his life to save a kid. He wanted to be someone that protects. To dedicate his life towards making others' lives better. This story is his journey towards achieving that. It doesn't do the typical anime thing of him wanting to be a certain way, and then suddenly he is. Changing who you are is a lifelong journey. Yu Yu Hakusho tackles human nature better than I've seen any other anime. I'll tell you this right now man. If you're not enjoying the series now, then you're not going to. I honestly recommend dropping the series. Most people consider the Dark Tournament to be their favorite arc. In fact, many consider it to be the best tournament arc of any anime. If you only think it's a 5/10, then you are not going to enjoy the rest.

I think something that people fail to realize is I’m not a kid, a casual anime fan or a casual movie fan. I’m a producer for a film company. I love stories. And what you described as a typical anime thing of “sudden change” never happens. It always takes a series of events and hardships to achieve said goal. It’s never a “wake up in the morning” and I have what I want. What you have to understand is we usually migrate to stories that we as humans align with individually. I’m very goal oriented and want to achieve certain things in my life. So I tend to gravitate towards those stories more of aspiration. Like I said in the video, I like the interpersonal character development in the show, just the fighting in the tournament was mid at best. I also said I want to finish the story to see what else develops for these characters. Just because I don’t love it like you doesn’t me you need to shun me from watching it. Perspective is everything and I’m glad it resonates with you and others.

Again what you guys are missing is that I have said “up to this point” which means the story isn’t finished and I’m wanting to finish to see where the story goes lol. You guys are acting like I’ve seen the entire series lol

GoldArthur

I apologize if it felt like I was trying to shun you. I wasn't. I simply meant it as a warning. If you did not like the Dark Tournament arc, then I don't think you will like the rest of the series. To put it bluntly, the rest of the series builds off of the Dark Tournament. To put it in Naruto terms, it was the Pain arc. In Bleach terms, the Soul Society arc. In DBZ terms, the Cell Games. In One Piece terms, it was Marineford.

Oh, I get that my guy. Love your viewpoints and takes. I got where you were coming from, and why you feel the way you do up to this point especially with your background. I really wasn’t trying to dog pile on you boss. I’ll pop back out when you finished and look forward to discussing the show more in depth!
