What made Vietnam different was this wasn’t a war we got into because we were attacked. It was a war to fight communism and mainly to keep up the depiction of American military superiority. By the point in the war depicted in the movie most of the people were draftees who didn’t want to be there, unlike WW2. Part of the training was to make the soldiers not think of the Vietnamese as humans so these soldiers who don’t want to be there can kill since this wasn’t really a war about claiming territory as much as a war about inflicting pain till they surrender which they never did.

Many of the scenes in the film are based on real events. News crews embedded with the soldiers recording things like that village scene is part of what turned more Americans against the war. This movie was controversial when it came out because in the 80s it was still so fresh people didn’t want to talk about Vietnam. The fact that Oliver Stone actually fought in the war is what persuaded them to green light the movie. This was definitely Charlie Sheen’s breakout role. He starred in Wall Street, Oliver Stones next film which was another highly recognized film. Tom Berenger gets to play a more likable soldier as the Union General in the movie about the Battle of Gettysburg.
