There are two different tiers of service members in all branches: Officers and Enlisted men. Enlisted men are the people who choose to join or are drafted, and they rank from Private to Command Sergeant Major of *The Branch*. The highest you'd see at this level is a First Sergeant like Lipton was with the three chevrons top and bottom with the diamond in between. Enlisted men wear stripes to note their enlisted rank. Those with 3 stripes (Sergeant) and above are referred to as NCOs or non-commissioned officers. Officers tend to be college educated people. The earliest rank, after cadet, is 2nd Lieutenant. What happened with Lipton is he was honorably discharged from his *enlisted* service (serving as Easy Company's 1st Sergeant), and commissioning him as an officer as 2nd Lieutenant. 2nd Lieutenant Jones was promoted to 1st Lieutenant after his patrol, and it was said that the regiment wanted him on staff, so kind of a desk job, so he's not sticking with Easy. There's a good instruction for determining military ranks at the defense department's website here: https://www.defense.gov/Resources/Insignia/ If you are interested the Enlisted ranks for the U.S. Army as are follows: Private (no stripe or one stripe, depending on grade) Private First Class (one stripe above and one below) Corporal/Specialist (same grade, different roles, though Specialists are technically considered outranked by Corporals) (Corporals have two stripes, specialists have an adaptation of the U.S. seal as their isignia) Sergeant (three stripes) Staff Sergeant (three above, one below) Sergeant First Class (three above, two below) Master Sergeant/First Sergeant (same grade, different roles) (Master sergeant has three above, three below, as does First Sergeant, but First Sergeant has a Diamond in the gap between the stripes) Sergeant Major (three above, three below, star in the middle) Command Sergeant Major (three above, three below, wings and a star in the middle) Sergeant Major of The Army (There is only one person in this position) (three above, three below, and the U.S. seal in between) The Officer Ranks: 2nd Lieutenant (Gold Bar) 1st Lieutenant (Silver Bar) Captain (Two Silver bars) Major (Gold Oakleaves) Lieutenant Colonel (Silver Oakleaves) Colonel (Silver Eagle) The General ranks (These all have silver stars): Brigadier General * Major General ** Lieutenant General *** General **** General of the Army ***** (wartime position, This was Dwight D. Eisenhower's position during WWII, he was also given the rank of Supreme Allied Commander, commanding all of the allied forces, not just the U.S.) Sorry for the info dump. There's a tier called Warrant Officers, but they don't come into play in the show, and nobody cares about them and their very important work.

Hey!! US Coast Guard Petty Officer Vet here, how about "Petty-Officers" & "Crows"?? ( jus-effin-wictha, Bro!) ... lol!

Cheers to you Petty Officer o7. I didn't mention Navy or Coast Guard ranks since the 101st is Army. I'm much more familiar with Army and Marine ranks than the other branches, it's a bit harder to remember some of them with all of the redundancies in their naming.
