its sad but for me its easily the best written part of the story, the sad love story of 2 cursed wizards that truly love life wanting to find a way to lift the curse together, only to end up "killing one" and isolating the other one and giving him basically the confirmation that the world still rejects him and that he should just keep to his original plan. Its so sad because Zeref doesn't want to do this, he just wants to die since he already achieved his other original goal, bringing his younger brother back to life.

They never fucked with a god, the god just happens to be a petty asshole and punishes people trying to save people that are doomed to die or already dead by turning them into heartless madmen and killing machines, creating the greatest mass murderers and menaces to humanity in history, all out of pure pettiness. That aside I would say god doesn't equal god, Ankhseram itself is clearly in a different league from an incarnation of one of the Yakuma Eighteen Battle Gods.

You can watch this flashback without having seen Zero. The original FT Zero wasn't part of the FT manga it was a spin-off that Mashima wrote so there were a lot of people who got to this point in the manga who hadn't read Zero so there were character introductions for the people who hadn't read it. This also led to some people thinking that the FT Zero anime was a filler arc when it first aired. I get why Precht didn't tell Yuri about why his wife died. Mavis only had the curse because she used Law to try and save Yuri. So while it's sad he never knew the truth he'd only blame himself if he did, he already felt awful about being the reason Mavis wasn't aging, so I think Precht made the right decision in not telling him.

Zeref threw Mavis' body and walked away like nothing because that was the only way he could avoid killing pretty much everything around him. He HAD to do that to be able to give the one he loved the proper respect she deserved. Curse of Contradictions indeed.
