Though not quite as common as it was, it's pretty common for Japanese VAs to actually sing a song (if not the main theme of the anime. 2 names huge for that back in the late ninties/early two thousands were Megumi Hayashibara, and Masami Okui. They were in so much stuff back then that off hand I'm not sure if they were more VAs, musical artists, or straight up idols. Unrelated note though I totally agree with you on Shield Hero. Show had a lot of promise but really went down hill to me around the time they brought in the Filo queen, and S2 was pretty trash all the way through. Don't think it'll recover and not sure I care enough to go for the manga.
