Ah Jami, I've come back to watch this. What a great show! I have this thought - probably the experts on the show already know about it but, Kirei explained to Gilgamesh that 7 servants have to be sacrificed - but I think this is an event separate from winning the holy grail correct? - After winning the grail the mage from a major family (Tohsaka) plans to open a gate directly to the root, maybe this is their wish and to do this they plan to sacrifice all the servants. Therefore if a different person wins the grail (like Waver or Kirei or Kiritsugu) they can have their own different wish and there is no "root" involved. It's confusing but I think this is probably right.
