Hello everyone! If Patreon hasn't informed you with an email JUNE 1st Patreon is implementing sales tax into pledges.

This may not effect everyone but here is important information.

Now, it says that creators can optimize this setting so later this month I will look more into it.

But I just wanted to inform everyone the update on the Patreon site as a whole.

That’s cool, no big deal.😎

Wishmaker007

wow, interesting, a few cents isn't much to me but I imagine some will definitely take this info into consideration, thanks for the heads up SMF :)

Anonymous

Ok 👌 cool I didn’t know this thanks for the info

smf_frieza

I am pretty sure most of the $1 pledges won't be affected at all which is practically 85% of my patreons

Lye Batenkaitos

Crap who would have thought we would have our donations taxed lol

Anonymous

Damn im already paying bit taxes because of this. :D

smf_frieza

I think Patreon will email users later this month. At least I would hope so

Anonymous

I'm glad I have a VPN

Anonymous

I've already been paying sales tax for many months. Nothing new for me which is why I probably didn't get this e-mail from patreon

James Fiarito

Thats kind of scummy, this is donations. They shouldn’t be able to Tax money we’re donating to you guys

Anonymous

Everything is gonna be like this at this rate haha... 😂

Enoch Washington

Thanks for letting us know about this 👍

Anonymous

I am not afraid, I already pay taxs 😎 😭

Anonymous

Honestly thank you for making most of your reactions so affordable. For an unemployed student like myself, $1 is very affordable and not too much to ask. Most reactors I’ve seen don’t have this kind of tier so I’m really thankful.

Anonymous

I’m in it for the long haul no matter how much it is honestly lol 🤷🏾‍♂️

Marek Pfeifer

Wow Patreon just wow. I guess the greed is getting to them.

Shendue

Taxing DONATIONS is a bit of a scam. Pretty sure we aren't paying for a service, but just supporting a creator.

Anonymous

I already pay taxes with every monthly donation since I first signed up for Patreon so nothing new rlly (at least not for me)

B00ch

sometimes they can't help it (i don't want to pay it) just saying. remember a time when amazon didn't charge tax or didn't do it specifically on your state? lol

fitz_xr

So it's based on my location thank god my country doesn't charge any taxes

Kay M

ive never seen a tax charge whenever patreon charges me so i guess we'll have to see if that changes

Robert Johnson

I didn't think anything of it but the people mentioned they're trying to tax donations, and that's fucking scummy. That could easily be the tipping point for some people and make them pull their donations. Some people just want to give what they want to give and no more, and that extra 50 cents would make some people stop donating. So yeah, fuck that shit. I'm staying, but still fuck that.

Anonymous

Well i've been paying taxes a while already for pledges. Im finnish and we basically pay taxes on everything so never though about it.

ZackNero03

Thank you for the update.

All Might

Doesn't this kinda go against what patreon stood for in the first place?

Anonymous

Yeah some creators really abuse with 15$ min to watch full reaction, that's more than I pay for Netflix 4K + Prime Video + Spotify + youtube premium (5.51€ + 2€ + 4.99€ + 0.96€=13.46€ = 14.77$). I'm in France, I used a vpn to pay Netflix 4K with turkish currency (41.99 turkish lira=5.92$), Prime Video for Student is 24€ a year, spotify for student is 4.99€ a month and youtube premium is 0.96€ with vpn to India

GoldArthur

I'm saying this to everyone, not just you, but, I'd really like you to consider moving to SubscribeStar. In my opinion, their platform is more friendly to both you AND us.

Cains

The reality is that this is not donating and honestly trying to call it that should not just give you a free pass to not pay taxes. Like SMF is great I think she deserves normal business anyway, but her reactions are locked unless you pay a certain amount of money to her. You are not donating, you are buying her content.

Leon

Legally in most countries donations means getting nothing directly in return. A lot of Patreon tiers offer direct/regular rewards or advantages, which legally makes them a "service subscription" in and therefore sales tax/VAT applies. Only patreon tiers that offer no rewards can legally be exempt from sales tax or VAT.

Voidaken

Am I paying CA sales tax? It doesn't specify if it's MY location or YOUR location.

Deagor

Sure, because patreon was meant to be a place to "toss a coin to your witcher" but in a lot of area's - reactors especially - its become a subscription service where you pay money for content so saying THIS is going against what they stood for is kinda strange when we've all kinda been using it for its not intended purpose for over a year now.

Deagor

*shrug* I've been getting taxed @ 23% like I do for everything else in my country for patreon so absolutely nothing changes here. Not to start any culture wars but I'll never understand the American opposition to taxes. Tell them a coffee costs 5 dollars and they'll pay it no problem, tell them it costs 4.50 with a 10% sales tax and they'll lose their damn minds. I know taxation without represenation was a bit of sore point in the past but this isn't that. So ye, this was already a thing for many of us, its really not a big deal if you can afford 5dollars a month you can afford 5.50 - and if you can't then you probably shouldn't be giving your money to other people. I still manage to keep up 40euro worth of subscriptions on patreon @23%

Waver

Subscribestar is very rough around the edges and is most definitely not kinder to us. Unsubscribing instantly cuts off all benefits even if you paid for that month. With a few other issues here and there it's a better idea to stay here. Especially since swapping platforms will always cause a chunk of people to lose interest.

I mean, does it really change anything? If 50 cents cause you financial trouble you probably shouldnt have pledged in the first place.

GoldArthur

The problem for many is having to provide exact locale info. There's no law against using fake info SO LONG as taxes aren't involved. Now they are.

Anonymous

This small amount isn't exactly the hill I want to die on as far as taxes go, but I disagree with the example you gave. The $5 coffee, the coffee shop made the coffee not the govn't. When you work you get taxed, when you spend money you get taxed, when you make an investment and it makes money you get taxed. They take money from you every which way, and all we have to show for it is all sorts of corruption and bloat. Just speaking for myself that's why this American gets hot and bothered about taxes. Again not going to complain about this particular bit of change.
