"I don't care who'll win because it's such a nice game." is such a great mindset to have when watching Haikyuu, honestly. Like, sure, you want to cheer for Karasuno, but seeing all the effort put up by the other team just makes you want to cheer them on too :D It's also great that it's not only Kindaichi and Kunimi seeing the difference in Kageyama now that he's in Karasuno, but also that Kageyama now sees how his former teammates play when they have a better leader. Especially considering Kunimi's personality, to actually see him laugh must have been a big wake-up call for Kageyama. The tear-jerking aftercredit scene. I don't know about others, but I always bawl my eyes out during three particular scenes and this is one of them. Even though I've already seen Haikyuu like 8 times, even though Karasuno hasn't been my favourite team for a long time, it still makes me cry :D There is an OVA between seasons 1 and 2 called "Arrival of Haiba Lev" (or some similar version, depends on translation) that's worth watching. It's not necessarily canon since it's not in the manga, but you will meet one pretty interesting character there and you won't be confused after he appears in season 2.

The central theme of growth is definitely something you can see all around in this show, from so many characters and teams. The fact that Kageyama has the capacity to recognize it in others is a good sign he can manifest it in himself as well. I will definitely do the OVA between seasons then. :)

I enjoyed your reaction, and was prepared for the inevitability that you would not shed tears like Kawagata and me, haha. I don't have many language nerd comments, really. When they say "checkmate," it's actually just "check" ('oute', as in "match point / one more point and we win"), but I imagine that saying just "check" would be really ambiguous to an English audience, so that's probably why they translated it that way. The chess game analogy will come back in later seasons, though, so if they say "oute," that's what they mean: "check," as in, "adjust/adapt/show up now or lose." Takeda's speech translation was so-so, but you're good at seeing through that and you got the meaning there. In a nutshell: each individual game is like one small part of a much larger game of competitive play. Losing a game is like a trial or obstacle in the much bigger, meta-game, and your response to it will determine if you can still "win" in the end. :) I know Takeda can be cheesy and annoying, but he is basically me in anime form. Please be kind, haha. Music: going forward, there are a few completely original tracks, but most of the music will be an "evolved" version of some kind based on something from an earlier season. I don't know if you're into the music that much, but it's worth listening for. Noticing those connections gives a sort of a meta-commentary on what themes/episodes the editors thought were connected. I'll point out a few as they come up. ...but really, what I want to do is be greedy and ask for predictions! Haha. 1) Karasuno is now out of the Inter-High Tournament. They gave it their all, and they still came up short in the round of 16. Where do they go from here? What could they work on or do differently now? (I understand, of course, that there will be limits with the volleyball, but more thematically, maybe) 2) Tokonami and Dateko's third-year players retired after the Inter-High Tournament, officially ending their time as high school volleyball players. Most third-years retire because of the pressure to focus on their studies for university entrance, but it's not strictly required. Of the four third-years (Asahi, Kiyoko, Sawamura, Suga), do you think any of them are likely to retire now? 3) So far, on Karasuno, we've only really gotten to know (by jersey number) #1 Daichi, #2 Suga, #3 Asahi, #4 Noya, #5 Tanaka, #6 Ennoshita ("the other guy"), #9 Kageyama, #10 Hinata, #11 Tsukishima, #12 Yamaguchi. Who takes the loss the hardest? Who recovers the quickest?

1) tough one! Maybe more practice matches? Is doing any traveling to play against others an option? Could be healthy to get a change of scenery. 2) nah I’m leaning against any of them retiring, I didn’t feel like they got closure/didn’t feel like the writing implied finality to anyone. 3) I’ll lean into Kageyama taking loss the hardest, with Hinata in a close 2nd place. His fiery competitive spirit and high expectations make it hurt a lot (I can relate), but in general both of them are inexperienced with losing. I will say Noya or Takana take it the best. Noya has this crazy intelligent objectiveness to him, where he just seems to get the bigger picture. Him and Takana also have the raw positive spirit to endure.
