Fading Into the Ether: Warlock Ends Its Run (Patreon)
Content
Sad tidings this time, folks: the Warlock Patreon has reached the end, and we're shutting it down at the end of 2022.
We're letting you know now that there are three Warlock releases yet to come. First, though, let's go down memory lane by the numbers:
Launched: Wednesday, Aug 2, 2017, at 9:54 AM
High Water Mark: 941 patrons
Price: $1/month, never increased
Lairs Delivered: 78 lairs and 1 hardcover (+1 more, see below)
Zines Delivered: 36 zines + 3 special editions (+1 more, see below)
Grimoires Delivered: 3 hardcovers (+1 more, see below)
We're going out with a bang, of course. The final print and PDF Warlock zine 37 is 32 pages, rather larger than the usual 24 to 28 pages. We're taking things in a planar direction, per Scott's guidance and editorial acumen. Fire and sky, stone and ocean, all things in their essences. It's mystical and we've got a new cover artist as well.... The zine will be in your hands before the New Year
The final Warlock Lair 79 will be a triple-sized adventure by none other than Richard Pett, the wickedly talented designer we somehow corralled once more on the English moors. Scott held him down and Wolfgang doused him in holy water until he said, "Ya right bastids, leave me be!" and "Fine! Triple length lair it is, now shove off, Yanks!" (We swear this story is almost true.) Ships either very late December or early January.
Not least: Scott is already at work on Warlock Grimoire 4, for all those poor sods who missed the zines the first time, plus new content, arriving in autumn 2023.
- What About January? You will not be charged for this Patreon in January 2023 or after.
- Where Do I Go for Midgard Support? Free Midgard content will be published on the Kobold Press blog on Mondays, and it started this week. Paid content will continue to be produced to expand the Midgard setting as print and PDF releases published by Kobold Press. The new release is Zobeck: Clockwork City, now available in PDF, with print on backorder and shipping in early January.
- Why Now? The patreon is losing money due to rising postage, print, design, and art costs. And just as importantly, we realized that 5 years is a good long run in the zine world. The Warlock team will turn its hands to something new and hideously weird soon enough.
- How Much are the Zines Worth? We have no idea. The print run has always been a couple hundred copies, maxing out at over 300 copies in 2021.
- Would you consider doing a ZineQuest, a bake sale, or something? Don't tempt us.
- Who Is Responsible for this Atrocity! I Have Words for Them! Well, there's only the four of us, but sure. We're sad to see it go, and grateful to have had a chance to entertain, surprise, and possibly annoy you in our impish warlock way.
Wishing you many more eldritch blasts,
- Scott Gable, editor
- Amber Seger, graphic designer
- Marc Radle, art director
- Wolfgang Baur, publisher
- Plus the whole horde of freelancers who made Warlock shine
