Well, Youpi essentially found out that he can use his emotions to release more power than he otherwise can. And that controlling his emotions properly can be a valuable asset in combat. As for the pride thing... it's not just a Japanese culture thing. Women can be like it as well, but... it's a trait mostly found among men. There's simply times when a man has to act.
