when the anime plays the sad versions of their outros...one of my favorite aspects of HxH's music

The royal guards shifting loyalty to the king was actually explained in one of the early episodes of this arc. When a king is born, they set out with the king who will eventually find someone to reproduce another queen with. Meanwhile, the queen would periodically birth new royal guards and kings and the cycle continues. But the queen got busted up pretty hard here, so... her cycle is broken. I think it could be accurate that the queen consumed a few nen-users. Some people who are very good at something can develop nen without actually knowing what it is. At some point she consumed over 100 humans a day and later even 250. Maybe even more in the final days. So she's eaten at least thousands of people over the course of those months and they probably saved the best for her. The king's design was definitely inspired by Cell from DBZ. Though of course he's still a very different character. And Cell has never killed a child on-screen to eat her brain, only to spit it out because he still thought it was disgusting. Well, at least he's a bit of a gourmet.

What he was eating at minute 0.8:00 was the penguin's leg, that's why the others looked at meruem strange, practically what he was doing was cannivalism.
