This was great Sarah! Love how excited you are about the show, and you are exactly right, this story has the feel of a telenovela - albeit a very fancy, well written, high budget, and with lots of lore attached to it telenovela. 😁 Just a friendly warning to prepare yourself, because the "ickyness" factor is going to grow exponentially. I believe the king marrying his daughter's best friend or someone suggesting to marry Rhaenyra to her 2 year old step-brother 😲 - actually, that one is a doozy even for GoT fans, lol - is going to feel tame by the end of the series.

The king is my favorite character in this series so far. You can tell he wants to do what is best for people. Especially for Rhaenyra. He doesn’t like politics, yet he does feel trapped by it and bound by duty and tradition. As you said, I think he is a good man, but he’s slipping. Worrying about Rhaenyra , the kingdom, the mysterious disease that’s eating away at his hand, and his drinking (which, I think the reason he started drinking was to numb the pain of his hand disease), is causing him to slowly lose sanity. As Rhaenyra said, “he can worry himself to death,” it almost seems like that is what’s happening. Not to mention, he's the king of the seven kingdoms, a pretty huge responsibility. I do like Rhaenyra too, though. One of my favorite parts is 12:52, when the king tells Rhaenyra that she has duties, and she says “as I am ceaselessly reminded.” The king says “sorry?”, and instead of shrinking back like some people would, she doubled down (bc if I had to guess, the king did know what she said, and that “sorry?” was more of a "watch your step" than an "I didn't catch that"). Kind of sassy, but I think it was a telling moment.

I was not referring so much to the step-brother part. Targaryens married brothers and sisters all the time - Aegon The Conqueror was married to his two sisters, Jahaerys - the king before Viserys - was married to his sister, etc. etc. I was referring more to the part where the kid was just 2 years old! 😲
