Happy October everyone! It's officially spooky season!! I love everything about fall except for horror movies. They're not my thang! Give me some not-so-scary movie recommendations for October! I'm already planning on watching:

  • Scary Movie

  • Tucker & Dale v. Evil

  • Zombieland: Double Tap

  • Young Frankenstein (as of now, it doesn't look like this one is available to rent or stream in the US, but I'm keeping an eye out for when it becomes available to watch)

I think these movies will give me some comedic relief between the (slightly) scarier movies I'll watch this month. Comment below your recommendations for some horror/thrillers that you think I can handle!

Comments

Cameron Kerby

Stir of Echoes (Kevin Bacon) The Burbs (Tom Hanks)

KingGoji94

The omen (1976) I think you can handle that one

Cole Trahan

Hours (2013) not too scary but it’s a thriller, based on a real event.

Fallen (1998)

Chase

9 (2009)

Ali D

The Frighteners

BNJ

The Frighteners (1996) Sleepy Hollow (1999) Addams Family (1991) - not exactly horror but quite "halloweeney"

carbsix

The Others (2001)

Joe Cross

The Little Stranger has a creepy factor but isn’t scary. Murder By Death is a comedy / horror. And of course Little Shop of Horrors the musical comedy is always a banger

Byrd N. Hand

I already gave you this list back in your 'Ask Me Anything' segment for August, but I'll just post it again (with a couple additions): More comedic/light-hearted in nature: "Murder by Death" "Clue" "The Witches of Eastwick" "The 'Burbs" "Corpse Bride" "Dark Shadows" "Frankenweenie" "What We Do in the Shadows" Sequels/prequels to past October reactions: "Red Dragon" and "Hannibal" "Prometheus" "Doctor Sleep" 'Creature' features: "Creature from the Black Lagoon" "The Birds" "Piranha" (1978) "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1978) "Arachnophobia" More 'thriller-y' than scary: "Repulsion" "Wait Until Dark" "Rosemary's Baby" "Play 'Misty' for Me" "The Dead Zone" "Christine" "Misery" "Black Swan" More tragic than scary: "Frankenstein" (1931) [you'll get even more of the jokes in "Young Frankenstein" if you watch this first] "The Fly" (1986) Zombie movies (not as comedic in nature as "Shaun of the Dead" or "Zombieland"): "Night of the Living Dead" (1968) and "Dawn of the Dead" (1978) "28 Days Later" "Train to Busan" Werewolf movies: "The Wolf Man" (1941) "The Howling" "An American Werewolf in London" Bona fide horror films: "The Exorcist" (many of us are just going to keep persisting on this one 🤐) "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974) "Black Christmas" (1974) [you can also watch this in December 😏] "The Omen" (1976) "Suspiria" (1977) "The Fog" (1980) "Poltergeist" (1982) "Sleepy Hollow"

Emptysea93

Another spooky but not scary set of movies is the 90s Addams Family movies with Raul Julia, Angelica Houston, and Christina Ricci. If you have not already seen them, they are an absolute blast and cult classic. Given your love of some other random stuff on here I think they will be good for you.

Pumpkinhead (1988)

Alex Tan

Happy Tuesday and Happy October, Addie. For the scaries, my recommendations are Rosemary's Baby (1968), The Exorcist (1973), Cape Fear (both 1962 & 1991 versions), Copycat (1995), Fear (1996), Anaconda (1997), Scream 2 (1997), Hollow Man (2000), What Lies Beneath (2000), *EDIT 2: Hide and Seek (2005)*, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), Nope (2022), Smile (2022), *EDIT 3: Trap (2024)*, the Evil Dead trilogy and Evil Dead Rise (2023). For the fun stuff, I suggest Freaky (2020), the Ghostbusters sequels Ghostbusters II (1989), Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021), & Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024), The Haunted Mansion (2003), Haunted Mansion (2023), Casper (1995), *EDIT: Hubie Halloween (2020)*, and Totally Killer (2023). #MoreHalloweenMoviesForAddieCounts

KingGoji94

More recently horror, late night with the devil is a good one too I think you can handle

SnakeandNape

Duel, Stephen Speilberg's first movie as a director. It's more of a thriller but not too scary.

OldManVax

I completely agree that the Addams Family movies are super seasonally appropriate and a lot of fun.

Justin

Seeing as you liked the first one, I will recommend continuing the Scream franchise with Scream 2. The also Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow featuring Johnny Depp, The Frighteners featuring Michael J Fox, and Ernest Scared Stupid for some lighthearted dumb scaryness.

stray

What We Do in the Shadows (2014)

Ben Wheeler

Ok some of these are admittedly pretty old school and I mentioned some in the comments for Van Helsing but Frankenstein (1931), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), The Mummy (1932), Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948), The Ghost and Mr Chicken (Don Knotts, 1966), The Halloween Tree (1993), Sleepy Hollow (1999), It Follows (2014) .

John W Foster

You might also consider the Burbs (1989), if you haven't seen it. It has both Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher and is a sort of lighter, comedic horror movie. A slightly scarier movie (thought it's animated, so your mileage may vary) is Coraline (2009).

Jon Anderson

I'll go for a couple of British classics. I think you might like The Wicker Man (1973), it's more mystery/suspense than horror and will keep you guessing. If you're in the mood for a horror comedy, Theatre of Blood (1973) is a hoot.

Mathias

Some you could probably handle: The Mist (2007) Signs (2002) Legion (2010) The Wolfman (2010) There's a newer, more intense movie I think many of us would like you to see called Last Voyage of the Demeter.

Simon Haynes

Cloverfield (2008) Crawl (2019) Don't Breathe (2016) The Faculty (1998) Happy Death Day (2017) Lake Placid (1999)

Doug

Tucker and Dale and Young Frankenstein are awesome. 😄 Unfortunately, like you said, Young Frankenstein seems to be totally unavailable on any streaming service and has been for a few years. Disney apparently owns the rights to it but for some reason they’re sitting on it with no sign of putting it up on Disney+ or anywhere else, it’s very strange considering how popular the movie is.

Randee Carreno

Happy October Tuesday, Addie! 🎃👻 Here are some of my favorite scary movies: "Night of the Comet"(1984)- a campy zombie movie, at least the first "Scream" movie(1996), the original 1984 "A Nightmare on Elm Street"(it's always a must-watch for me this time of the year), "The Exorcist"(1973), the original 1982 "Poltergeist", "The Burbs"(1989), "Clue(1985)- a fun type of spooky movie, the 1990 2-part "IT" mini-series, the 2017 "IT" remake and the 2019 sequel "IT: Chapter 2", "Lights Out"(2016), and because of the sequel movie that's in theaters now, if you haven't seen yet "Beetlejuice"(1988). Have a great day today! 😊

Byrd N. Hand

Nothing 'horror' about "Murder by Death;" it's basically an Agatha Christie/whodunnit spoof. If she watches "Little Shop of Horrors," I recommend she watches either the theatrical cut or director's cut in its entirety and then also watches the just third act of whichever version she didn't watch as well (since that last act is literally the only difference between the 2 versions).

Doug

As far as more serious, scarier horror movies go, my suggestions include - Let the Right One In - An American Werewolf in London (it’s half comedy, half scary) - 28 Days Later (my favorite zombie movie after Shaun of the Dead) - Get Out - Midsommar or Hereditary (both really good but also really intense, fyi) - The Babadook (🎵 doo-dooo da doo-dooo) - The Omen or The Exorcist (Not sure Addie will watch these but they’re classics so I wouldn’t feel right not including them)

Wolverine

Hereditary, Hellraiser, Midsommar, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dawn of the Dead (1978), Reanimator

Doug

Ooh, Cloverfield and Don’t Breathe are both great. 👍

Doug

I don’t like Signs personally, but The Mist is a good one. 🙂

Thats MR. Baldamort

I will also request Cloverfield! I will also suggest getting into the mosterverse with Godzilla 2014!

Doug

I almost put Wicker Man on my list too. Just make sure it’s the original, the remake with Nicholas Cage is awful!

Nathan Swapp

Sleepy Hollow (1999) And a lighter toned underrated movie, The House with a clock in its walls (with Jack Black & Cate Blanchett)

Alex Tan

Say it with me: WE WANT THE EXORCIST! ✊✊✊✊ WE WANT THE EXORCIST! ✊✊✊✊ WE WANT THE EXORCIST! ✊✊✊✊ WE WANT THE EXORCIST! ✊✊✊✊ #TheExorcistForAddieCounts

Doug

Long list! Out of these, my favorites are Witches of Eastwick, Misery, 28 Days Later, An American Werewolf in London, The Exorcist, and The Omen

Ronny Boss

A good horror comedy you would probably enjoy is Behind the Mask:The Rise of Leslie Vernon. It's a pretty smart take on the slasher genre

Doug

Whoa, that’s a deep cut! 😄 Michael J Fox horror movie, not a log of people have seen it either. I thought it was fun though. 👍

Steve

The Evil Dead (1981) Misery (1990) Event Horizon (1997) Train to Busan (2016) A Quiet Place (2018)

Ernesto Lopez

Scary stories to tell in the dark

Byrd N. Hand

Of course, "The 'Burbs" also includes a brief, spoiler-ish clip of another major horror movie, so I'd rather she not watch it until she's watched that one first (no matter how much she may protest 🤐).

Brent Petty

Train to Busan

Kyle Brandon Sanger

Me: cracks knuckles. Train to Busan. The Evil Dead 2 Army of Darkness Dog Soldiers Night of the Living Dead (1968) Return of the Living Dead (1985) 28 Days Later 28 Weeks Later (Has one of my favorites scenes ever!!) 30 Days of Night Interview with the Vampire (film) Blair Witch Project (1999) The Exorcist (1973) [It's really not that scary IMO] Near Dark [Better than 'The Lost Boys'] Constantine (2005) [Its a DC/Vertigo comic book film] Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) Event Horizon Sleepy Hollow (1999) Insidious Trick r Treat Creep Show (1982) Fright Night

Byrd N. Hand

Indeed, Shyamalan lost me with "Signs"... though most didn't start catching on to his one-trick pony hack-ery until either "The Village" or "Lady in the Water"... or "The Happening"... or "The Last Airbender" if you were *really* dim. 🤷‍♂️

DM DC

Tucker and Dale vs Evil is great!!!! That has my vote 100%!

Byrd N. Hand

I'd prefer she watch the original "Night of the Living Dead" before "Dawn of the Dead."

Byrd N. Hand

If it seems you can't access "Young Frankenstein" before the end of the month, I'll personally gift you either a DVD or Blu-ray copy (with all my credit card rewards points, I won't have to actually pay anything for it). Just PM me which format you'd prefer and the address to which I should send it. This is why I feel physical media should still be considered relevant.

Mr. Writhms

Here's few to choose from: "Braindead" (1992, horror/comedy: zombies, very over the top exaggerated gore meant for laughs). "The Birds" (1963, Alfred Hitchcock: killer birds, suspenseful). "Monster House" (2006, animated horror/comedy). "Blade 2: (2002, action/horror: Blade battling creepy monster vampires this time). "The Frighteners" (1996, horror/comedy: Michael J. Fox plays a ghost hunter). "Identity" (2003, horror/mystery: a very good suspense thriller whodunit with John Cusack). "Creepshow" (1982, horror/fantasy: 5 short stories based on a horror comic book. Purposely campy to mimic the comic book, some gore, and a few jump scares. "Happy Death Day" (2017, horror/mystery: Think a cross between "Groundhog Day" and "Scream", a LOT of fun.

Joseph Blankenship

I'm not a big horror person either, but I've come to really love the Scream franchise recently. So, if you could do Scream 2, that would be great. Only other one I could think as a horror comedy that would be nice is 'The Blackening'.

Doug

Only problem is even if Addie has the DvD the great majority of her Patreon audience won’t. Hardly anybody will be able to watch along.

JDV

Hellboy (2004) is more fantasy gothic but is spooky sometimes, and it seems other reactors are doing this movie lately because of the new one that came out. It's fun and funny and not very scary.

Mr. Writhms

I second "Sleepy Hollow", a great Tim Burton movie. She's not going near "The Exorcist" with a 10 foot cross. lol

Byrd N. Hand

Yes, I believe the scariness of "The Exorcist" has been greatly exaggerated over the years. If she survived "The Shining," she can survive that one. And if you're going to recommend the "Evil Dead" movies, you might as well have her start with the first one.

Byrd N. Hand

Forgive me for having the foresight to see that this whole streaming situation was going to be a total clusterfuck for being able to watch certain titles. 🤷‍♂️ Either way, I know the movie well enough that I don't really need to literally watch it along with her to get the full effect of her reaction (as I have with several other titles). I'd like to think a fair amount of others feel the same way.

Philip Davetas

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, damn it.

Andy Munden

Coraline Nightmare Before Christmas Sleepy Hollow (1999) Alien Ghostbusters (1984) Hocus Pocus Hotel Transylvania The Omen (1976)

Byrd N. Hand

She's seen all of those except "Coraline," "Sleepy Hollow," "Hotel Transylvania," and "The Omen."

Kyle Brandon Sanger

I think 'The Shining' is childsplay, its not scary at all. Along with 'The Exorcist' they're what I personally call horror epics, grand in the vain of historical epics but with horror. Also, I have recommended 'The Evil Dead' trilogy to Addie before. She knows that they are more or less horror comedies but I've recommended she should start with 'Evil Dead 2' because its more a comedy and less gore. 'Ash vs Evil Dead' is an underrated series and I was sad that it got cancelled.

Ian Forbes

Monster Squad (1987) will be right up your alley.

RX-1

War of the Worlds (2005) Shutter (2004) Let Me In (2010) Silent Hill (2006)

Byrd N. Hand

Mr, Writhms, you're not exactly helping our cause. Stop discouraging her from watching cinematic classics.

Tim Heron

Manhunter (1986) and/or Red Dragon (2002). Not scary, per se, but good thrillers. Edit: I'd also add the original 1973 version of "The Wicker Man".

Byrd N. Hand

I'm personally sick of this double standard so many people have toward horror films compared to all other genres. Why is fear so much harder for people to willingly expose themselves to than any other emotion?? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Byrd N. Hand

Mr. Writhms, if you claim to be a film buff but still don't know most of the story beats to "Young Frankenstein" without having to actually literally see them in front of your face, I'd say you might want to have your credentials revoked. 🤐

SavageDiplomat

Since you are doing Scary Movie which is a spoof of horror films id recommend you watch I Know what you did "last summer" before watching Scary Movie since its one of the main spoofs along with Scream

Byrd N. Hand

I'd love to see her finish the Hannibal Lecter series by watching both "Red Dragon" and "Hannibal." She can skip the universally despised "Hannibal Rising." "Manhunter" did nothing for me when I first saw it (it almost felt a bit like a glorified Miami Vice episode to me... and the less said about the cheesy-ass synth score, the better), but if she wants to watch it somewhere down the road, so be it.

ButtercupsTrueLove

"Invasion of the Body Snatchers", the 1978 remake, shot on location in San Francisco. "World War Z" (2013). More action thriller than gore fest.

Mr. Writhms

Byrd: MY apologies. I'm sure "WE WANT THE EXORCIST" was working. lol

Travis Berzas

Hey, I'm not sure whether you use streaming stuff exclusively, for which this one may not be available, but the WNUF Halloween Special is not very scary and is a good Halloween movie. It's a mockumentary kind of thing, replicating local TV Halloween programming from the '80s.

Andre Agog

I would recommend Peter Jackson's first two movies: Bad Taste (1987) and Meet The Feebles (1989). It will show you a very different side of the man who went onto direct Lord of the Rings!

max

Bubba Ho tep. Funny and just a little scary

BareJordan

I'd like to recommend Happy Death Day (2017). It's a horror comedy and a very fun one at that. You can handle the spooky parts.

Kyle Brandon Sanger

Totally agree. I'm not a fan of horror myself, but over the last few years, I've watch a lot more horror than I'd my entire life, some were better than others. Horror as a genre doesn't get the respect it deserves. For example, the Academy only recognized 'Silence of the Lambs' because it was labeled as psychological thriller NOT horror. The word horror is 'sensitive' when it comes to the Academy. My guess is that horror is made for the cheap and not the usual multi-million summer blockbuster like the rest of the Hollywood genres, also, horror is varied with possession, monster/creature feature, serial killer/thriller, ghosts, and found footage.

Mr. Writhms

Byrd: Because fear is the only emotion that makes you shit your pants. :)

Byrd N. Hand

If you truly think "The Exorcist" is any scarier than "The Shining," you're delusional. This idea that she can't handle the former after handling the latter is just ridiculous, IMO.

Pendragon1951

I would like to recommend The Uninvited 1944, It's a classic black and white, it's a little scary, has mystery, comedy romance and even a dog! It's the perfect October movie if you need a link let me know.

Jay Perry

Your lineup is perfect for me. No notes.

drew

i would recomend ghostbusters (1984) hocus pocus (1993) casper fright night (1985)

Byrd N. Hand

Yet sadness/depression can potentially make people want to off themselves, Mr. Writhms... 🤐

Jay Perry

I am using a Roku TV and in the Movieland Tv channel, I can watch Young Frankenstein free. I'm in America. Maybe that's a solution?

Mr. Writhms

Byrd: Half the fun to me is watching the movie along with the reactor. Plus I laugh every time I watch "Young Frankenstein". If that is an offense then I gladly hand you my credentials. 😏 "Credentials?! We don't need no stinking credentials!" (If you can name the movie I just spoofed with that quote, you win.)

thomas king

October is also known as Rock-tober. Movies about bands to break up the horror and blood. This is Spinal Tap, The Commitments, Jersey Boys, Straight Out of Compton, La Bamba, Detroit Rock City......

Byrd N. Hand

Well, Mr. Writhms, you just attempted to spoof one of the most commonly misquoted lines from a movie ever, alongside 'Play it again, Sam' and 'Luke, I am your father:' 'Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!' from "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre."

Mr. Writhms

It boils down to this for me: I'm a horror fan but if someone relays to me they don't want to watch a movie for whatever reason, I don't try to pressure them. People have boundaries and I respect them. That's it.

Byrd N. Hand

So, basically, you're not even remotely interested in challenging someone's preconceived notions about something...

Mr. Writhms

Byrd: I come here to enjoy myself, not to petty squabble over movies. I'm just going by what Addie expressed to us. "The Exorcist" is not scary at all to me anymore; it was when I was a kid. But what is not scary to us may scare others. That's all I'm saying. You can continue your crusade to convince Addie to watch whatever you want. I won't interject with your posts any further. No hard feelings from my end.

Happy Hanukkah

No, he was accurately spoofing the spoof of the line from Blazing Saddles. Quite fitting, given the director/writer. :-)

Happy Hanukkah

Army of Darkness (1992). [I'm firmly in the "stand-alone" camp.]

Luis Fernandez

Here are my recommendations for this year: a. Creepshow (1982) or Trick 'r Treat (2007). These are short story compilations. None are too scary, but all entertaining. b. Night of the Living Dead (1968). Classic but still creepy for modern audiences. Like other classic films, it has subtext beyond the obvious story. c. An American Werewolf in London (1981). Classic. A good mixture of horror and humor, but I would call it a horror and not a horror-comedy. Not too scary but brilliant. d. Talk To Me (2022). Goriest and creepiest I'll suggest. If you like horror it isn't scary, but if you scare easy it'll be enough to make you uncomfortable. e. The Witch (2015). Probably my favorite horror movie from the last 25 years. Some people find it boring but I think it is a slow burn that is creepy as hell. (And I fully support the "no Exorcist" decision... but if you do change your mind I vote for the original version)

JBK405

"Ready or Not" the the most recent horror movie that really worked for me.

Beth Brown

Addie, I worked at Blockbuster for 14 years, so i won't steer u wrong. Here are some horror movies for your Scary but not so Scary Witchtober; 1) Christine 2) Carrie (the original) 3)Constantine 4) The Craft 5) The Lost Boys 6) Bram Stoker's Dracula( Gary oldman) 7) Dracula Dead and Loving it 8) Halloween 2(1981) 8) Talk To Me 9) Beetlejuice 10) Firestarter 11) I Know What You Did Last Summer 12) Trick R' Treat(2007). I love both you, your channel and Ollie. Happy Halloween.

Julian San

All these recommendations are good but I want a movie that will guarantee some tearful bawling. Train to Busan.

Scott

Army of Darkness

Will Castillo

The Missing (2003 film) It's a spooky, not-so-scary, western film.

Ben

Ghostbusters 1984, the people under the stairs, drag me to hell

Scot Jebens

I swear half the horror/war movie recommendations have to do less about the movie and more with the ‘Break the cutie’ or ‘Corrupt the cutie’ tropes! :) https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BreakTheCutie https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CorruptTheCutie

Miles E Coburn

“Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” (1948)(Black and White) – Comedy duo Bud Abbott and Lou Costello play baggage handlers who run afoul of the Universal Studios monsters. Dracula (Bela Lugosi) wants to use Lou’s brain to re-animate the Frankenstein monster (Glenn Strange) to ensure it is more compliant to his suggestions. Working against Dracula is Lawrence Talbot (aka The Wolfman) who tries to get the two men to aid him in wrecking Dracula’s plans. Also included is a cameo by another of the Universal Studio monsters.

HeyHeyJK

If you've got a DVD player I can send you the special edition DVD of "Young Frankenstein". Highly doubtful but thought I'd give it a shot since it's my all-time favorite Mel Brooks movie, although you'll get more out of it if you first watch the original "Frankenstein" and "Bride of Frankenstein".

HeyHeyJK

"Tucker & Dale vs. Evil" and "Cabin in the Woods" are my two favorite horror comedies ever and make a great double-feature.

Darian Harman

Saturday The 14th (1988) is a wholesome, goofy horror spoof. I think with your theater background, it would be right up your alley.

Pearl Jam

Happy Death Day

Tim Heron

Manhunter is certainly a product of its time, but I think it should be experienced at least once simply because it was the first Hannibal Lecter film; since "Silence of the Lambs" earned so much acclaim, people either don't know or forget that another film predated it.

Raj Hudek

The Frighteners The Skeleton Key Super 8 Shutter Island 1408

Byrd N. Hand

Granted, it's not the end of the world if she never watches it. There are plenty of other films I want her to react to more than that one. But someone putting so much stock into what other people generally say about a movie before actually seeing it is just plain silly to me. 🤷‍♂️

Robert Lemond

Night of the Living Dead(1968) The Exorcist(1973) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(1974) The Omen(1976) American Psycho(2000)

These are all movies that I would call "Friday night movies" In that they are ones that are NOT scary, and don't require much if any thinking. Byrd N. Hand

It seems reactors don't want to watch movies on channels that include ads, despite them still being free... 🤷‍♂️

Byrd N. Hand

She watched "Ghostbusters" as one of her earliest reactions, but removed it from YouTube (along with her reactions to "E.T.," "Beetlejuice," and "Edward Scissorhands"), due to not being satisfied with her editing on it(/them), but unfortunately apparently lost the files containing them before being able to re-edit/re-upload them. 😕

If she faces "Martyrs" head-on, she'll never dread the horror genre again. It's the ultimate antidote to fear!
