Let's watch something light and fun! Help me choose what to watch next! (I'm not planning on watching the sequels to any of these)

It's gotta be "The Blues Brothers". That's easily one of the funniest movies ever made.

QuigonJim25

I don't think 'Smokey and The Bandit' will win, but it should.

Alex Lee

My heart said Police Academy, but i really don't think it has aged well. So i went for another beloved movie from my childhood, Crocodile Dundee!

Alex Tan

Happy Thursday, Addie. You're DEFINITELY in need of something comedic, after War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) made you cry yesterday. All are great but The Blues Brothers (1980) & Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997) got my votes.

The mall in the Blues Brothers, Dixie Square mall, was about 20 minutes from my house when I was in high school. It wasn’t in the nicest area, Harvey, Illinois, and had been closed for a while. When we heard they were filming there my three friends and I watched the filming for a week. We were all chosen to be in a crowd scene, right before the ‘new Oldsmobiles are in early this year’ line. The person in charge of extras told us we could be in the scene, but we wouldn’t get paid because we were underage; I was 14. It was my first time seeing a movie actually filmed and really cool to see John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd who were huge on SNL, which I wasn’t allowed to watch. Being a 14 year old, of course I found ways around that - I stayed over at a friend’s house whose parents didn’t care what we watched. You know, thinking about that makes me jealous of the kids today that have instant access to every form of media there is. One thing I think kids today miss out on are shared experiences - for example, the day after Happy Days was on, everyone at school talked about it because everyone watched it. With media so fragmented today and so many choices available I don’t think that’s so common anymore. But I guess you can just share videos with your friends - it’s pretty much the same thing, just in a smaller group. Oh well, if you do watch The Blues Brothers, enjoy it because it’s one of those movies like Monty Python and the Holy Grail - there’s tons of lines that are highly quotable. My two favorites being: "We're 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.... Hit it." and “We're Getting The Band Back Together"

WARNING: You'll get a lot more jokes in the Austin Powers movies if you've seen the early James Bond movies first (which you haven't yet).

Byrd N. Hand

It is indeed one of the only comedies that can get away with its over-2-hour runtime... and still the only genuinely good movie based on a Saturday Night Live act.

Randee Carreno

Happy Thursday, Addie! 😊 All great choices for this poll. "The Blues Brothers" easily got my vote for this one, followed by "Police Academy" as my second choice. Have a great day today! 😊

Thats MR. Baldamort

True, but lots of people and even reactors have seen Austin powers before James bond and it still ended up being a fav comedy. while I do agree thst she would get more of the jokes, it's not required viewing to still laugh at them and get the jist. It you go into them knowing it's a parody, you'll still have a great time.

Scot Jebens

Ahh, “The Waterboy”. In my 50+ years, one of only two movies I’ve ever walked out of the theater on. The other one will probably shock everyone, but it’s Pulp Fiction. It’s kind of a weird story. I was in the Marine Corps stationed just outside of Los Angeles. My wife and I had just seen The Naked Gun and as we were leaving the theater, a man asked us if we’d like free tickets to see a film preview the next night - the film had no title, but since we were walking out of a comedy, we assumed it would be a comedy. We took the tickets, and came back the next night. The theater was mostly full and we talked with other couples wondering what the movie was. A man walked out and introduced himself, he said his name but I didn’t recognize it, of course I later found out it was Quention Tarantino. He said it was an early cut of the movie and was mostly complete, it still needed sound mixing and color correction. He wasn’t wrong about the sound mixing, the sound was so loud and the treble was so high any metallic sound actually hurt your ears. I remember a trunk opening and a scene where they cocked their pistols being especially painful. As you can imagine, after a few minutes we discovered it wasn’t a comedy - well, not a normal comedy, I guess. We put up with it for maybe a half-hour before my wife and I walked out and we did that after another couple walked out also - we didn’t want to be the first. We just left the review cards on our seats and didn’t fill them out. No one stopped us in the lobby and asked our opinion or anything which kind of surprised me. I’m no prude but when expecting a comedy and seeing what I saw, it was shocking. Later when the movie came out and was treated like one of the of the best movies in the word, we were really confused. I’ve never actually watched the final version but I have to say, the one we saw at the preview was over the top violent and bizarre (and loud). I can’t compare it to the released version but I can only assume there were some massive differences. And that’s my Pulp Fiction story.

Byrd N. Hand

It's Addie's call, obviously, but it's soooo much more satisfying when a reactor gets all the references, IMO (see: Jen Murray).

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

I knew it had no chance but I voted Smokey and the Bandit...great film and very nostalgic for me

Thats MR. Baldamort

Which James bond should she watch? I can't imagine she needs to watch more than one or two films just to get more of the jokes.

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

One thing that holds true for pretty much all react polls across all sites...pretty easy to predict the winners (or at least top 2).. I wonder if the audiences across all react sites intersect that much or if the general feelings about film just lean toward the mainstream

Byrd N. Hand

Ironically, I don't think I've ever seen the original "Police Academy" -- only its increasingly sophomoric sequels (well, not the seventh one made years later). 🤔

Scot Jebens

EDIT: My wife corrected me that the movie was Naked Gun 33 1/3, not the original. While verifying that, I discovered they were rebooting The Naked Gun in 2025 with Liam Neeson! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Naked_Gun_(2025_film)

Byrd N. Hand

Well, "Goldfinger" definitely -- it's the only one from the Connery/Lazenby years that isn't tied to the SPECTRE/Blofeld narrative... and it pretty much solidified the series formula. Probably "Dr. No" as well (given a particular costume choice by Dr. Evil in the first Austin Powers movie). Hell, all of those first 3, also adding "From Russia with Love" (my personal favorite) to the mix. Those would suffice for now... though I eventually want her to watch them all.

Thats MR. Baldamort

Yeah it's the downside about polls. all the same movies win all the time, it why I like when reactors just make their own choices from suggestions taken rather than relying on polls too heavily.

Phil Stubblefield

As someone else has undoubtedly said, I'm not shocked that Austin Powers is winning. It *is* a cultural pop icon that must be experienced at least once, but I personally don't enjoy much of its adolescent humor. It will, of course, win this poll because... YouTube. I'd much prefer Smokey and the Bandit, The Blues Brothers, or Crocodile Dundee, all of which are much more well rounded comedies!

Thats MR. Baldamort

Addie, when you watch Austin powers you HAVE to watch all 3. They are so fun and each one is great. The first austin powers film literally ends in a cliff hanger and a story that continues itself with each film with the conclusion only in the 3rd film. I know you said you don't plan on watching sequals, but I ask why? You would be missing out with Austin Powers not watching the 3 movies. They are legendary comedy. Id say on par with the Rush Hour films for enjoyment.

WorldCitizen

Smokey and the Bandit is AWESOME.

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

I agree, I really enjoy Austin Powers...I just keep hoping against hope (never successfully) for things that aren't reacted to by every other channel... It is nice to see some things not reacted to often...but such is life

The Dingo

I have to believe people not voting for Smokey and Bandit just haven't seen that movie

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

Agreed...one reason I joined the top tier when I saw she doing wheel spin once a month (wish it was at least twice a month)..but of course I soon realized a lot of the suggestions are mainstream things that have been reacted to by most channels....such is life...I'll keep hoping... I plan on requesting at some time or another.. Thoroughbreds, Bottoms, The Squid and the Whale, Junebug,The Book Thief.. etc etc... there are so many great movies that few ever react to...

Byrd N. Hand

I'm holding out the faintest of hope that she'll override the results and put it on hold and wait until she's seen at least the first few Bond movies -- thus presumably paving the way for "The Blues Brothers." 🙏

Stephen Malloy

Blues Brothers. The all time greatest musical.

Doug

My votes are for Blues Brothers, Austin Powers, or The Other Guys. All three are really funny. 😄 Heads up for Addie, though - The Blues Brothers has a lot of music (really great music in fact!). It's still worth watching but you'll probably be doing a lot of editing. 🤷‍♂️

Byrd N. Hand

I admittedly haven't. I feel as though it's always had a reputation from various people I've encountered for being a bit... 'redneck-y.' 🤔

Doug

Wayne's World is very funny. 😄 But yeah, the rest of the SNL based movies you can skip.

The Dingo

It is set in the south and given it was made in the 70's it has some racist aspects to it, but it's more of a commentary - without spoiling too much, the racist character is the antagonist who is a buffoon and moron, and is meant to be seen that way

Jon Anderson

Smokey and the Bandit is one of those movies that tells you a lot about where the viewer grew up. When we were kids, we thought it was a documentary.

Byrd N. Hand

That's the very reason I also finally joined her top tier after all these years. And, yes, I was also a little disappointed to see so many very mainstream titles suggested. I try to strike the right balance between being too mainstream and/or done to death by other reactors and being too niche so as they won't perform *too* poorly on YouTube (I prefer reactors to keep their Patreon exclusives to a bare minimum... and "Poor Things" - this month's winner - already looks to be headed for that status). Of course, clearly not everyone sees it that way. 🤷‍♂️

Sean

I think Austin Powers works great for a reaction video.

Randolph Tirazona

Ollie says:"Dances with Wolves" (1990). FYI: Sally Field was in Giget and The Flying Nun, both of which i had to watch because of my sisters! 😆

Alex Tan

For me, it doesn't matter if a movie is too mainstream or has been "done to death" by other reactors because the bottom line is that Addie hasn't seen it yet and I've been suggesting movies that I enjoyed that she hasn't seen yet, regardless of its status.

Damien Brown

If haven't seen Austin Powers missing out

LaserLamb

I'm inclined to agree with you. A.P., after all, IS a James Bond spoof. I'm not a Bond aficionado, but I'd say Dr. No, Goldfinger & at least one more from the '60s should be enough to give a good Bond foundation. Yes, w/o the Bond background, A.P. will seem funny & bizarre, but w/ the Bond background, you see how bizarre & quirky those movies originally were, & you're very much in on the jokes.

LaserLamb

I've seen it edited fairly well for a ThemTube hatchet job, but if it proves to be too much for whatever reason, perhaps it could become a Patreon Exclusive? 🤩

LaserLamb

I'd say all but 2 of these are top tier comedy gold in my book. The ones that aren't — "Smokey...." & "Crocodile...."— are still charming, entertaining movies.

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

Certainly all opinions are valid…and I get where you are coming from. For me it isn’t that different…but there are tons of movies I enjoy.. (I go to 3 movies every week at the cinema and have done so for most of my 57 years..ha)…so granted I have a big list… and if there are a lot of movies I enjoy that have been done by many reactors…I certainly still have A LOT of movies I enjoy that are rarely or never done by reactors…so just makes sense It would be nice to see ones that don’t get love from reactors…just common a sense….but it is what it is…and I acknowledge art is subjective..so even ones I really really really do not like.. (such as The Waterboy)..I fully realize others will enjoy and should be able to do so

Spawncalibur

Many great classics but The Other Guys is so funny. “I'm a peacock Captain! You gotta let me fly!”

Scot Jebens

Well, I have liked other Sandler movies (Happy Gilmore), but for some reason The Waterboy wasn’t just not funny to me, it was offensively not funny.

Billy Dancel

The sequels to these are the reason why this is one of my least favorite polls. I don't mind which movie wins though.

Byrd N. Hand

Plenty of reactors have made it stick on YT, so I have no doubt Addie will be able to as well. But stranger things have happened...

Mr. Writhms

Byrd: "Smokey and the Bandit" is one of Alfred Hitchcock's favorite movies (not a joke). If it's good enough for Hitchcock, its good enough for you. 😁

Byrd N. Hand

As I mentioned, I think it's easiest just to go with the first 3: "Dr. No," "From Russia with Love," and "Goldfinger" -- though, given that the first seven movies all have a loose through line (well, except for "Goldfinger;" that's 100% standalone), I prefer it she watched them all... but coming off the M:I series, I doubt she'll want to dive into another franchise of over 5 movies so soon. But hopefully she watches the rest of them eventually.
