Happy Wednesday, Addie. Let the Planet of the Apes journey begin. See you soon for Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011). EDIT: BTW, nice A24 t-shirt.

I've been waiting for this! Glad to see you start at the og film. Still a classic!

Happy Wednesday, Addie! 😊 Let the Apes journey begin!!! Glad that you're starting with the original "Planet of the Apes" movie before jumping into the newer ones. I've only seen bits and pieces of this movie. So for the most part it's going to be a first time watch for me as well. Definitely looking forward to watching this one later this evening. Have a great day today! 😊

I have to say, I would absolutely love to watch your reactions to the rest of the original movies. Some aren't so great, but some are really good. They also tie into the new movies :D

I love retro future stuff, and really enjoyed this. Maybe add 2001: A Space Odyssey (also came out in 1968) to the list.

“Get your stinkin’ paws off me, you damn dirty ape!”…is what Addie says to her harassers.

You nailed identifying how certain social issues were central to this movie, but also remember that the Cold War was going on during this time, so the idea of humanity blowing itself up was a very real thing. This might be an urban legend, so someone more knowledgeable could fact-check me, but I had heard years ago that the ending was initially to be censored because of the profanity (couldn't say "God damn" back then). But then it was argued that from Taylor's perspective, it wasn't an idle exclamation - he was genuinely asking God to damn humanity to hell for what they had done, and so it got by censors based on it not being profanity but expressing an actual and justified desire for damnation. Again, that may not be true, but I kinda hope that it is.

After you make your way through the newer series, you may want to look at the older sequels to the original. They aren't great cinema, but they have a certain charm that make them worth watching if you are a fan. (Edit; I meant watch on your own time... I don't think they'd be great for the channel)

One last thing... this is a good time to revisit Trevor Slattery's Planet of the Apes discussion in Shang Chi. Now that you've seen the movie I'll bet you find it even funnier.

"The first time I witnessed pure artistry, 1968, The Planet of the Apes. I was sitting in the cinema next to my mom watching mastery unfold before my very eyes. After the film, I asked her ' how do they get those monkeys to do those things?' And she patted me on the head and said 'It's not real pet, it's just acting.' That's when I knew, ... if they can teach those monkeys to act that brilliantly, just imagine what I could bring to the world." "... So you became an actor because you thought the monkeys were..." "Riding horses, I did! Yes! When in fact, ... they were simply Acting as if they were riding horses." - Trevor Slattery Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

I am just a year younger than this movie. So I don’t remember if I had seen this when I was younger. By the time I got into movies this likely seemed old and boring. But I did like black and white movies and shows. Great start to the movies, Addie!

psssst.... GoT/HotD

You didn't have this reference for one of Spaceballs final scenes yet! now you do!

The first time I watched "Planet of the Apes", my initial surprise was not seeing the apes on horseback but earlier when they showed a female and a Black astronaut, because every astronaut I'd ever seen up in the news up to that point in history was a white male. Another fun moment for me that is more coincidental than anything else is after Taylor is sprung from the holding compound and meets up with Cornelius and Dr. Zira, he insists on arming himself with a rifle. Later in real life, actor Charlton Heston served as president of the NRA!
