As promised, I am starting my Mission: Impossible journey!! This one was a lot of fun, and I love when a movie has some good twists and turns! It was a lil cheesier than I expected. I thought that this would be a very serious action movie (I was expecting the tone to be more like the Bourne movies), but it was definitely so fun to watch! Enjoy!

After the first couple they start getting even better with every film

Happy Mission: Impossible Monday, Addie. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to watch all of the Mission: Impossible sequels, to prepare yourself for Mission: Impossible 8, next year. See you soon for Mission: Impossible 2 (2000).

Philip Davetas

The first two are not my favorites, but enjoyed M:I 3 even though it felt like a recycled episode of ALIAS. But I think this franchise found its footing with GHOST PROTOCOL.

Mission: Explosive Exploits https://youtu.be/maoZUXgWgtc?feature=shared EDIT: Since you watch The Iron Giant (1999) & Speed (1994) in 16:9 pan and scan format, here's what happens when Mission: Impossible (1996) is presented in 4:3 pan and scan. https://youtu.be/0tCxBU9GafU?feature=shared

I like them all very much and am excited for this franchise but the films will vary their tone for a bit until #3 starts the shift and #4 pretty much cements what the future installments will feel like. For the most part, the films get better and better.

Speaking of Brian De Palma, who directed this movie, I also suggest Carrie (1976, for Halloween), Scarface (1983), The Untouchables (1987), Casualties of War (1989), Raising Cain (1992, also for Halloween), Carlito's Way (1993), Snake Eyes (1998, THIS IS NOT A SNAKE MOVIE), Mission to Mars (2000) and The Black Dahlia (2006). #MoreBrianDePalmaForAddieCounts

Happy Monday, Addie! I hope that you had a great weekend. 😊 I've been looking forward to you getting started on this franchise. It's been awhile since I've seen this first one. Definitely looking forward to re-visiting this one later this evening. Already looking forward to you getting to the other movies in this series. Have a great day today! 😊

Mission impossible films get amazing after MI2. Tom Cruise dials up the acting and the stunts and each movie has less and less CGI involved.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to have a great time over the course of seven films.

Great reaction. Personally i can watch the entire franchise over and over. Its so good. I have my personal favorites. I wont say what they are as i would prefer you to make up your own mind and not be influenced by opinions but i enjoy them all. Terrific franchise.

Happy Monday, Addie. As many others have said, the movies just get better. Although the next one has a reputation as the worst one in the franchise, it's still a fun time, as long as you go into it knowing it's kinda cheesy, more so than this one. That's mostly because the director of that movie, John Woo, has a certain style of action movies, that is very different to the rest of the movies. A bit of context for this one; It's based off of a fairly popular television series from the 60's where Jim Phelps is the main character - the Ethan Hunt of that time, but because of that, there were a lot of fans of that show that hated the movie for making Jim such a villain - especially the actor who played him originally. I'd argue that they could have prevented most of that controversy if they'd not made him such a dislikable villain.

I'm glad you had fun watching this, Addie! I think you'll enjoy the franchise quite a bit. The prevailing opinion is that M:I-2 is the weakest of the bunch, and while I agree with that I also think it probably gets trashed more than it deserves. It's a pretty good movie, it just doesn't feel like "Mission: Impossible" to me. M:I-3 is where I feel the franchise really kicks into gear, and M:I-5("Rogue Nation") is still my favorite of the bunch. I also have a soft spot for this first one, because it felt more like a "spy" story and wasn't as over-the-top with the action sequences. Yes, all of that with the train and the helicopter in the tunnel is "restrained" for the MI franchise, if you can believe it :) I also have a fondness for this one because back in the 90's Emmanuelle Béart(who played Phelps' wife Claire) was one of the most beautiful women I have EVER seen. :)

Steve Mercier

Some people will tell you to skip the second one, others will not. Please do as you feel necessary (it's my least favorite of the bunch, but...watchable). They start getting particularly good around the fourth one, but the third one is still damn enjoyable. From there, it's all uphill...

I am excited for this journey, the MI movies are one of the best franchises that is still technically going on since we have 1 more movie left, you're in for a crazy ride Addie.

I remember when this came out it was a big shock that Emilio Estevez dies like 15 minutes into the film, he was a pretty big actor at the time so when people saw him onscreen they just assumed he'd play a bigger part. 😄 Also if you ever watched the television show Jim Phelps was the main character. Which, again, made it kind of a shock that he turned bad.

Justin

I am so excited to watch these with you, it is such a good series! I'm sure there will be those who say to skip MI2. It is not a good film, but it is by no means a bad film. Even being the lowest on the Mission Impossible totem-pole, it is still a very entertaining movie and worth a watch. You can still see a Mission Impossible framework, just with that particular director's essence framing it.

I used to watch this t.v. show as a kid, and I am a big Tom Cruise fan ever since seeing Risky Business in theaters, and my all time favorite director is Brian DePalma. So when I saw this movie trailer in the theaters I was psyched beyond belief. It is my favorite of the series of movies, but only because of DePalma, otherwise I think that the fourth (Ghost Protocol) is the best one. However, they do just get better and better with each entry. So I am going to enjoy rewatching them all with Addie... assuming you do watch them all. :)

I love that they stuck to the television show format of showing clips from the upcoming episode during the title theme. It was always so much fun to wonder how those clips would come about during the episode.

This was one of the first DVDs (and movies) I ever bought, back in '97. I saw the next two but I don't think I ever bought them. Haven't seen any of them after that. And I don't plan to.

Billy Dancel

Some friends and I went to see this opening weekend and ended up in the second row noses up against the screen. Then we went back the next day and sat in the middle of the theater. There’s a good chance that by the time you finish all the M I movies the newest movie will be around the corner. lol

Vwlss Nvwls

A lot of die hard fans were upset that they not only killed, but also make Jim Phelps the villain, since he was always the main character in the t.v. show. I did not mind this, because I thought it was an unexpected and more exciting way to pass the torch to Ethan.

Byrd N. Hand

Bear in mind this came out the same year as "Independence Day," "The Rock," and "Twister;" that (at least semi-)cheesy tone was largely where action movies were at that time.

Patrick Egan

The eighth one isn't due out until May of next year, I think she's got time :)

Jacob King

The reason Jim shoots his wife is because, while he was okay with her seducing Ethan, he got jealous when she didn’t want Ethan killed. When they made this movie they didn’t know it was going to have a sequel let alone turn into one of the biggest franchises of all time. While they are all fun the next one is sort of the odd one out. MI:3 is kind of a reboot after the Bourne movies were so successful. There is however a scene in this movie that only pays off in MI:7…

Spawncalibur

If you think this cheesy even a little bit umm wait till John Woo takes over. Def 90s vibe. Original my favorite still. All great though

Michael Keefer

MI2 is tough to watch because of the fact that John woo directs it. Think face off. Alot of flips and spins and birds flying across the screen it's overall corny and a stand alone movie. The villain seems generic. The long hair Ethan has doesn't match his character. It's a tough watch but you won't get that until watching the rest. 3 was always my favorite until they introduced Rebecca Ferguson. Ilsa is a great character that really plays off Ethan well

Oh, yeah, the Mission: Impossible movies are more fun than serious, like the James Bond movies before Bourne came out and spy movies had to be grim and serious. This franchise has more in common with heist movies like Ocean's Eleven. It's all about the fun of executing a plan then getting away with it. (Except for M:I-2, which is mostly just a pale rip-off of the Hitchcock movie Notorious, but with more explosions, doves, slo-mo jumping through the air shooting, and motorcycle jousting.)
