Summary: As a last resort to save their tattered marriage, Gerald and Jessie Burlingame set off on a weekend adventure at their secluded lakeside retreat, in the hope of rekindling the long-lost affection in their relationship. Everything is taken care of: the fridge is well-stocked, and there's not a soul in the area to disturb the couple, as Gerald intends on playing a harmless but kinky sex game with a pair of handcuffs and a lot of imagination. But instead, when an unforeseen situation leaves Jessie handcuffed to their sturdy wooden bed, an entirely different game will commence--one that requires perseverance, a clear mind, and above all, a strong will to survive.

Stephen Crane

Just like Stephen King to put Carla Gugino in a bed, with handcuffs, and then ruin it.

Apart from the original Carrie, The Shining, Shawshank Redemption (and possibly The Mist, but that's only for the ending which is nothing like the book), I've not been really enthused about any adaption of his books. And some like Cujo or Dreamcatcher annoy me. And then, at the far end of that line up, like stepping in cat vomit with your bare feet at 2.00am when the kitchen light has gone out, stand Maximum Overdrive and Silver Bullet... I need a drink! Of his work adapted for TV I'd say that 'Salems Lot' and 'It' were the best.

I would say that the film was better than the book. but that's not saying very much. The one book (my favorite) that I would love to be made (into a mini-series) would be "Hearts in Atlantis". Along with "The Shining", "The Stand" and (for pure horror - "It" and "Pet Sematary") represents (for me, at least) King's best work.

Does anyone know if the film's ending differs from the book's in important ways? I agree with Dave Church that The Mist was a great adaptation but mainly because the ending showed some really great images and highlighted the Job aspect of the story. I also really enjoyed 1048, which is another "90% is in one room with one actor" and John Cusak giving a great performance while he has a mental meltdown (also liked Samuel L Jackson's take on the hotel manager--he gives it a very suave, polished but flat, New York take on how dumb Cusak's character is being.) King seems to write a lot of stuff that pays off in solo performances on screen.
