Thank you for the update, Robin. I am fine with the new schedule. You guys always put together great research videos and I am sure that the Val Lewton special will be worth the wait.

Take your time and do it right. We'll be happier, you'll be happier. Warner Home Video put out all nine Lewton "horror" titles in a boxed set which I fear is long out of print, but floats around for sale on the internet, sometimes broken up into individual discs. If you haven't, you might want to look at the Martin Scorsese produced documentary "Val Lewton: The Man In The Shadows" which was originally produced for TCM, also on Warner Home Video. If you can find an affordable copy, there's Joel E. Siegel's "Val Lewton: The Reality of Terror," published in 1973, you might find useful. I think what you'll find when you see the films together is a continuity of mood and philosophy, regardless of story and locale.

Return of the Vampire has a tenuous connection to the Universal films as it featured Lugosi as a Dracula-like character and a Talbot-like werewolf. Low rent, of course. But loved it as a kid.

You’ve changed the schedule. Oh, I’m used to my government betraying me. I was in Nam!

Sounds like a great idea for the Dracula / Lugosi special. Lugosi is so strongly identified with the role, that many people will be surprised at how few times he played it. It's better to do the special that you've got a good feeling for & time for, than to rush something else.

There's a box set available on Amazon containing both his nine horror films and the documentary you mention! I purchased it a while ago and it was definitely value for money.

I'm fine with the changes. If there's anything 2020 has taught us it's that if you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans. This is hard work but it should be work you enjoy, not feeling like you're endlessly cramming for a final exam! Also looking forward to your Dracula special. Legosi doesn't get enough credit as a straight up actor. Even when he was in William Beaudine quickie crap like Voodoo Man, he genuinely cared about his performance. He's creepy, he's sly, and he's heartbroken over his wife, all with complete sincerity. That film, by the way, was one of the "metatext" movies where it's both a horror film and commenting on Hollywood: the ostensible hero even writes up his experiences at the end and tells his boss that to star in it "you should get that fellow...Legosi."

Yeah, that will definitely feature in the special - the only reason it's not 'Dracula' is because it wasn't Universal. rb

As above - no problems with pushing it back. Take your time and get it to where you are happy with it. Next question is - when does your fourth book come out? (Bwaaahahahahahahhahahah!)

I'll take what's given and watch happily.

Dark Side Magazine did some great articles and features on Val Lewton only about a year or so ago. They would be a great start. I'm happy to scan the articles as PDFs and pass them onto you, Robin. One is an RKO career profile and the other is an indepth study of The Ghost Ship, the film that nearly destroyed his life and reputation.
