Rapid Response: Picard Trailer (Patreon)
Content
I wouldn't called myself a Trekkie (or Trekker or whatever the correct term is) but as a kid I always enjoyed Star Trek from the original series through to DS9, after which I rather lost interest. I found J. J. Abrams' reboots pretty loathsome, nothing to do with the ethos of the shows I loved and as incoherent plot-wise as everything he does. But, for all that I've fallen away from Stark Trek, the announcement of this series really excited me. Patrick Stewart raised everyone's game in Next Generation, and made that series more about the characters than the concepts. His Picard always felt like he could have a life beyond the outer space adventures and this seemed like a great idea for a show. The problem of course is that every Star Trek fan could probably write their own and has their own idea of what it should be - I'd have loved to see it focus on archaeology, which it doesn't seem to. It could easily be a disappointment, not through being bad, but through failing to be what we want. That said; so far, so good. I really like this trailer. It's tonally what I want; it is slow and meditative, hinting at an intelligent story that is more than flash and spectacle. There's plenty of stuff in there that fans will recognise but it doesn't look to be driven by it. In the end, I want to see something that allows Patrick Stewart to build on the role that made his name while remaining true to that character and the world he inhabits. And a great story.
