For July, I'm going to be doing a serial on Wednesdays, posting it scene by scene. I've only got part of this done so far, so we'll see how this goes. The story isn't complete yet either, so this is something different for me. I expect there to be about four to five installments of this, so we'll see where this ends up.

Monday, the only day of the week we’ve got left anymore. You think there’s going to be a Tuesday at some point, maybe a weekend, but you wake up, and it’s Monday again. Yeah, maybe the calendar says it’s Wednesday or Sunday, but in your heart, it’s Monday. It’s always Monday now.

I take another sip of my morning coffee as I watch the sun coming up over the tops of the distant skyscrapers from the balcony of my apartment. At least the view here in the old part of the town is still good. I feel at peace, ready to face the day, but by the time I came back inside, with the clock on my phone only reading 7:23 AM, I have seven text messages, a number of automatic alerts, and a missed phone call with a voicemail. Before I can even listen to the voice mail, the phone is ringing again.

“You going to let me finish my coffee, Jonas?” I responded picking up the phone.

“You turned on the feeds yet this morning, Sam?” came the raspy reply from the rat.

I sighed and rolled my eyes, not that he could hear me. “What’s a German shepherd got to do around here in order to get a good night’s rest? I just got up. I was up late last night working on the Proxima case.”

“Okay, I can wait for you to get them up.”

I growled annoyed into the phone. “Jeez, why don’t you shove my tail in a door while you’re at it. What the fuck happened?”

“It’s all over the news. The CEO of Proxima seems to have gotten whacked last night by someone. The whole case is in the trash now.”

My whole body sagged. “You aren’t shitting me are you?”

“With all that’s going down, you think I’ve got time to pull pranks?” asked the rat.

“No, but the case is going to have to be completely redone and…“ I shook my head. “Let me get another cup of coffee and get caught up. I’ll call you back.”

“Sure,” he said. “Let me know what you want to do.”

“Thanks,” I said sitting down on my couch. I hung up the phone and took a deep breath to prepare myself before picked up my tablet. I pulled up my inbox and looked over all the news alerts, taking a quick skim before I turned on the TV to see what the news networks were saying about the murder. The case was already on the morning news.

Even if the calendar doesn’t say it’s a Monday, it sure as hell feels like one.
