I've always loved that Don and Joan's relationship was kept strictly platonic. They seem like grizzled veterans of opposite sides of the same game, and as a result have a unique understanding of each other.

Two thoughts: Notice how easily Don writes out a check for 6000 dollars? The scene serves two purposes: to show how much money 6000 (or 8000) dollars was at the time - you could buy a luxury car! And how little of it Lane has. Another contrast: Betty would have NEVER (for most of their marriage anyways) dared to confront Don for being late like that, let alone to force him to sit down and have dinner.
