The episode has a great thematic arc but I think the reason I've watched it so much is because of the Heinz Beans pitch. It honestly may be in my top three ad pitches of the whole show and it's so satisfying the way it falls into place. To brutally undercut such satisfaction with a feeling of disappointment is so quintessentially Mad Men and I love it. It creates such a cognitive dissonance in the audience (in me at least) too, the fact that I've rewatched the episode just for that dinner scene yet the whole point is to make that catharsis fall utterly flat just shows how many complex and contradictory layers there are to the show.

You were talking over it, but when Roger spouts his line about how people are looking at you but not really paying attention, Don quips "Plenty of people who haven't taken LSD already know that". I thought it was relevant to point out given your comment at the end about Roger being in a "falsely elevated place", which that line of dialogue drives home nicely

The pitch is great because it's a vintage Don Draper pitch one episode after Cooper called him out for being disengaged from work. Also a great display of Megan's aptitude, despite her mixed feelings about the job.

Yep, Don saying that is one of my favorite lines and I was looking forward to it haha. It's a great encapsulation of how mundane Roger's enlightenment is, which itself is a great encapsulation of Roger's character and self-image in general

Yay I’m finally caught up! I love how they used a Shirley Temple to represent Sally’s childhood and how easily one event can rip it away. “Excuse me Miss, are you finished with that?” “Yes.”
