A Jewish Girl Walks Into the Apollo...

I've never loved the decision to end this season on such a depressing note, especially given how long the gap wound up being. However, I do think that the set at The Apollo was pitch-perfect character writing. I 100% buy Midge doing that set and not thinking twice about it, and I 100% buy Shy thinking it was way over the line. I tend to side way more with Shy, given the historical context and my own life experiences, but I appreciate how it was designed to be morally gray to an extent.

It is morally ambiguous and it's just fantastic screenwriting and filmmaking. You understand Shy and why he is upset but also you know where Midge is coming from and you know she isn't a bad person.

I think the reaction is due in equal parts to the precariousness of Shy's success as a Black and queer man whose image rests heavily on seeming available to women and to his choice to really, really trust Midge with his secrets (he hadn't told anyone his real name even, remember). Her talking about him at all was taken as a major breach in trust. I do feel really bad for Midge because I don't think it would've occurred to her to do it if Susie had been there/Reggie hadn't suggested it.

That's so true. We can't be mad for him being upset but it was an extreme response. We do see where he was coming from though.
