Another way to interpret Don's dream - he killed the temptation? This is only my second time thru Mad Men, I'm very much not remembering a lot of the details so this is just conjecture. :) Originally airing on April 8, 2012, 'Mystery Date' is Episode 4 of Season 5 of Mad Men. It is the 56th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.6, placing it as the #6 ranked episode of this season and #13 out of all the episodes shown so far.

He was trying to kill the temptation- the question is is he a "dry drunk" like someone in AA or other recovery who is "sober" for years but never put himself in a place to be tempted....

Meagan hits the nail right on the head when she highlights - more practically than Faye ever could have - that Don’s reckless “appetite” is a symptom of something that is beyond his unhappiness with Betty. Which of course we’ll see more of. For me, the fact that Meagan has since the beginning of their relationship had Don’s full trust indicates that he does indeed love her for somewhat the right reasons. Faye would solve him like a puzzle, but he shares his mind openly with Meagan.

That's fair. There is some compassion there but since it happened so fast and we know how he is, there's something about it that's hard to buy I guess. We're just waiting for it to blow up.

Don's rejection of the Cinderella idea and his hatred of Ginzburg's reversal recalls the very first episode of the series when he ridiculed the research about the "Death Wish" and cringes as Pete wrongheadedly pitches it to Lucky Strike. As the increasing violence of the Civil Rights struggle, the Vietnam War and sensational accounts of crime creep into the public consciousness, it's another sign that Pete Campbell was ahead of the times back in 1960, and Don is now falling behind. As recently as last season, Don recognizes almost immediately the significance of Ali knocking out Liston. Now, he is completely oblivious as everyone around him does nothing to hide their unseamly fascination with the Chicago killing spree, down to his own wife and daughter.

I get goosebumps every time I watch the scene with Joan leaving Greg. It is such a shame Christina Hendricks isn't more recognized because her acting, from her face and her repressed rage and facial expression is just pure gold.
